The cast and producers of ‘Haven’ graced the New York Comic Con stage in October. During the panel, I realized why Eric Balfour’s fans love him, why the male cast members love each other and why we love the show.
I also enjoyed watching Charles Ardai in the panel. I love writers. No, seriously, I LOVE them. They are the guiding, unseen hands for the show’s action and narrative. They create the characters, tear them apart and throw them back together again. While I’m grateful to most writers/publishing houses who construct thick, densely worded texts like Hard Case Crime, Charles is grateful to King for allowing Hard Case to publish Colorado Kid. I loved the Colorado Kid’s delicacy and wordplay not previously incorporated in earlier, horror-oriented King works. I’m looking forward to the second work he’ll publish with Hard Case next year. Does Charles want King on Haven? Hell, yes. Is Stephen as creepy in real life as his stories? Based on a story Charles told … hell, yes.
So, outside of watching the cast let their hair down, what else is on tap for lucky season three? We’ll learn more about Dave and Vince as well as Sarah, Audrey’s other past self. They filmed the Halloween episode in an actual haunted house where a ghost hunter literally warned them away. He also provided a chant to dispel the negative energy. The crew called it a miserable experience because the episode necessitated filming six days in an incredibly cramped space. While it probably helped with the Amityville Horror feeling of the house, no one knows if the spirit or the space contributed to the feeling.
Overall, performing with the same people on a daily basis for 12-hours a day is intense. You form friendships, but you can also irritate the hell out of each other, like brothers and sisters. Watching Lucas casually hang his arm off the back of Emily’s chair; watching Lucas, Adam and Eric good-naturedly chide each other; and watching the writers describe their favorite episodes, I saw good, professional working relationships. Unlike (or, maybe, like) their on-screen personas, they’re humans who can let their hair down. And, that was a very good thing.
