Annabelle has a few good scares just in time for Halloween

ANNABELLE

After appearing briefly in ‘The Conjuring,’ the Annabelle doll gets its own movie, but will it make your blood run cold and send chills down your spine?

Last summer a major studio gave us a moderately budgeted haunted house movie, The Conjuring, that scared up some good buzz and doubled its budget in profit. It seemed inevitable that there would be a sequel featuring lead characters Ed and Lorraine Warren, but legal wranglings over who owns the rights to the Warrens’ case files may have scuttled a direct sequel (although IMDB lists a Conjuring follow-up with stars Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga for 2015).

To keep the franchise alive, New Line has produced a sort-of-prequel featuring a minor character from the first movie: the cursed doll known as Annabelle. The doll was only an indirect precursor to what was to come in The Conjuring, and here we see another version of that expository scene (minus any appearance by Ed and Lorraine) which sets up a flashback that is the doll’s origin story.

Mysteries of the Unseen World is a beautiful “edutainment” look at what we cannot see

MUW Title Black

The educational film ‘Mysteries of the Unseen World’ has stunning visuals and something fascinating for the whole family.

There are a lot of educational movies that come and go in the various museums and IMAXes around the country, and they are often mostly forgettable. After all, if you’ve seen one breathtaking 3D look into the Grand Canyon or the bottom of the ocean, you’ve seen them all. So a new educational short film has to really be something special to stay in your memory. Will this be it? Well, time will tell, but Mysteries of the Unseen World, from director Louie Schwartzberg and narrated by the dulcet, soft tones of actor Forest Whitaker, certainly grabs your attention. At a hair under 40 minutes long, this is on the longer side of these short movies, but it’s just long enough that it doesn’t overstay its welcome. The movie has a simple concept: showing off, using amazing photography and visualizations, things in the world that humans are not normally capable of seeing. The movie is divided into four short segments, each devoted to one concept of “the unseen.”

Arrow Season Three: Cast and crew preview from SDCC 2014

‘Arrow’ ended last season with most of the stories tied up in a nice little bow. Will Oliver find a comfortable place where he can live both of his lives? Find out that and more as we preview this season with the help of the cast and the crew.

It is hard to believe that Arrow is now entering its third season. It seems like it was only yesterday that the Internets were abuzz with discussion of Stephen Amell and his salmon ladder. Today Arrow is a much different show than it was when it started: We’ve gained a Felicity and lost a Tommy. The Black Canary has come and gone (and will be back again) and Roy Harper has gone from street hood to Arsenal. In the meantime, Arrow has developed a rabid fan base and is the most watched show on The CW.

The show has always had a big presence at San Diego Comic-Con, and this summer was no exception. We had the opportunity to sit down with some of Team Arrow while we were there, including Stephen Amell (Oliver Queen), David Ramsay (John Diggle) Willa Holland (Thea Queen), Colton Hayes (Roy Harper), John Barrowman (Malcolm Merlin) and producers Greg Berlanti and Mark Guggenheim. As season three prepares to kick off next week, here’s what they told us to expect:

The Flash: Cast and crew preview the show from SDCC 2014

‘The Flash’ is one of the most-anticipated new shows of the fall season. We’ve seen the pilot and interviewed the cast and crew at SDCC this summer. This is what they told us.

Once you build a successful comic-book based series on a network that loves you, the natural thing to do is to build a spinoff. The Flash, along with “parent” show Arrow, represent much about what’s right on The CW these days. Grant Gustin is a perfect Barry Allen, and producers Geoff Johns, David Berlanti and Andrew Kreisberg have surrounded him with an outstanding cast, including Broadway star Jesse L. Martin (Joe West), TV heavyweight Tom Cavanagh (Harrison Wells), newcomers like Danielle Panabaker (Caitlin Snow) and they have even brought in someone who knows what it’s like to be under the cowl in John Wesley Shipp (Henry Allen).

We sat down with these folks at San Diego Comic-Con this summer, and as the show is set to premiere next week, we share what they told us is coming up in season one:

Forgotten Four asks more questions than it answers

forgotten four

‘Forgotten Four’ tells the story of four men who broke the color barrier in the NFL, but ends with unanswered questions.

The following is a Guest Review written by Monique Mercer.

Mr. Wesley E. Smith, Executive producer of Forgotten Four, started his journey making this movie about four magnificent men when he met Bill Willis about 8 years ago. He was quite fascinated by all the stories. So was I.

Forgotten Four is about four young men who broke the color barrier in pro football: Marion Motley, Woody Strode, Bill Willis, and Kenny Washington. The movie chronicled the humble beginnings of each man and how they fit into the evolution of pro football. During the 1920’s football was integrated. In 1921 Black players Fitz Pollard and Bobby Marshall played in the National Football League. After the Great Depression football was closed off to Blacks.
