Daily Show/Colbert Report – Rob Riggle goes home, Huckabee is cuddly, Stephen crushes on Michael Phelps

(Week of December 8, 2008)

Hey, kids! It’s time for a quick round-up of highlights from this week’s episodes of The Daily Show and The Colbert Report. This was an extra-special week, as we won’t be getting any new episodes until 2009. We also said good-bye to a few old friends, the weirdly scary Rob Riggle and Alan Colmes, who’s kind of scary in his own way. Here’s a fun fact about this photo of Rob Riggle: It’s actually what people see before they die.

Maybe it’s because Canada is inherently hilarious or maybe it’s because I love it when correspondents work with each other. In this segment, Aasif Mandvi and John Oliver ganged up on poor Canadian Samantha Bee for being Canadian, pretty much.

Jon also conducted a pretty intense interview with Mike Huckabee. I’ve long said that I don’t agree with a lot of Huckabee’s views but still really like him, and this time was no exception. The discussion veered into the extremely touchy subject of gay marriage and both parties were serious but polite. In the end, I felt the need to make hot cocoa for both him and Jon. Extra marshmallows, naturally, to make everyone feel better.

In other news, Rob Riggle is leaving! I certainly didn’t see this one coming. Amy Poehler left Saturday Night Live for realsies this week as well, so this was a double-whammy of sorts. Is the Upright Citizens Brigade gathering all its members again to return to the mother planet? It’s the only logical explanation, really. Or maybe it’s because Rob needs to get to work on his CBS sitcom. Fingers crossed he’ll do better than the last Rob that left. Speaking of Rob Corddry, his new web series, Children’s Hospital, is worth checking out, if only for the crazy comedy names that are involved.

Anyway, anyway… There was a nice segment devoted to Rob Riggle’s work over the past two years, conducted mainly by John Oliver. I thought they were a fantastic odd couple-y team, and it’s a shame they won’t get to push that further. Fingers crossed that we will at least get to see John Oliver desperately attempt to be a bad-ass (and fail miserably) again though.

And then Hall & Oates stopped by to sing about Alan Colmes. Yeah, my brain hurts too.

Over on the Colbert Report, Stephen managed to surprise even me when he got super-flirtatious with Michael Phelps. Maybe it was just me or maybe Stephen just has a strange way of expressing complete awe, but I sensed a little man-crush going on. See for yourself.

Eric Drysdale made a re-appearance as Bobby the Stage Manager. How very Christmas Carol of them.

That’s it for 2008, folks. Now go cry.
