The Amazing Race – Lance continues to give lawyers a bad rep

The Amazing Race 15: Lance & KeriIt’s bad enough Lance comes across as more of a meathead than a lawyer on this show. Knowing that he’s a lawyer, though, means he’s just perpetuating negative stereotypes of the profession.

Yes, he’s strong-willed and competitive, which are good traits in the legal profession, but he’s also treating his fiance like complete and total crap and refusing to own up to his role in any of their mishaps, of which there were many this week. Plus he has the patience of a six-year-old at Disney World.

I was also a little disappointed at his lack of deductive reasoning skills. I guess in the courtroom his tactic is to rely on his team to give him good information, and then flex at the witness and jury to scare them into giving him his way. Or maybe offer to wrestle with them “right now.” Yeah, that’s how you answer the question of being the most competitive person on the race: try to wrestle the host.

At the puppet theater, only Lance and Keri were seen to be so stupid as to not open the bullet and find what was inside. That said, at least they didn’t waste time taking turns dancing at the dragon puppets. What the hell was that?

On the next challenge, it was more just Lance trying to muscle through everything, knocking things over and getting pissed when trying to maneuver the animal. Speaking of muscling, he tore through the VCR disassembly with his bare hands.

I don’t necessarily think Lance is on the ‘roids, but he certainly displays some of the systems of the ‘roid rage. The longer they make it on the race, the more I’m thinking Keri may be rethinking their forthcoming nuptials.

At least, though, they didn’t decide to take the largest and most awkward animal on the cart ride through Vietnam, the way Zev and Justin did. That particular strategy made no sense whatsoever, but they wound up not paying for it as much as I thought they would. At least they were allowed to break it so long as they kept all the pieces.

In the end, Marcy and Ron just weren’t able to keep up with the other teams, and finished out a happy race. They were the oldest couple, but the least dramatic as far as “good television” goes. So far that’s my boy Lance screaming at his fiance and blaming her for everything.

Still, it’s early in the race yet and the stronger personalities don’t come out this early. As the stakes keep getting raised and the racers get more and more exhausted, we should start seeing more of the ugly. Everybody’s so likable right now (mostly) still.

“he tore through the VCR disassembly with his bare hands”

Seeing as the culture behind this challenge was that Vietnam recycles all these parts…I think he should have received a time penalty. How could they ever recycle things he’s completely destroyed? It warped the intent of the challenge, plus it damaged potential profitable items for them. It’s certainly clear which is the “ugly Americans” this year that have no respect for other cultures or countries.
