The Big Bang Theory – Koothrappali scores!

- Season 3, Episode 12 - "The Psychic Vortex"

About time regular television returned! I was trying to remember the last time I saw a fresh episode of The Big Bang Theory and realized it was almost a month ago. Sure, I saw the gang accept their People’s Choice Award and all, but a month is quite the hiatus for me. I would have liked it had Jim Parsons received the award he was nominated for, but the competition was tough for him. I adore him (and his Sheldon Cooper) anyway. Onto the show …

I enjoyed tonight’s episode, but … and it’s a big but … it went against pretty much all we know. Well, at least about Raj Koothrappali, that is. Maybe I’m being a nitpicker. But Raj wasn’t drunk when they picked up the girls. He had just started his first drink. And, he wasn’t drunk on the second date either. Now, you might say he’s growing more comfortable with women. But we haven’t seen any hint of improvement there at all. Then comes tonight — wham, bam, thank you, ma’am.

Okay, once I get past that, this was fun — it was full of exquisite Sheldon Cooper quips and facial expressions. Those alone make it all worthwhile for me. But, for me, the best line of the night belonged to Bernadette in the restaurant. I was thinking how uncomfortable they all seemed. So when the waitress asked how everything was and Bernadette replied, “Very uncomfortable,” that was perfection!

The Green Lantern lantern and the Incredible Hulk hands (signed by Stan Lee) were great bribes for Raj to make. However, when we think of Sheldon actually ever possibly maybe having an interest in a girl — Martha should be the one. She’s tall. She knows her comics and her science. She isn’t annoying like some people who end up being recurring characters (cough, Kwipke, cough). I wouldn’t mind seeing more of this relationship. How about you?

I don’t feel saddened that the PennyLenny relationship has its woes. They’re not a good couple. Yet the Wolowitz/Bernadette coupling is turning out quite interesting. I can only wonder how many bases are in her ball game. Overall, tonight’s episode wasn’t the best ever, but I’m so happy to have the show back! I must install my Linux now and learn Finnish before I go to bed …

We know Raj needing alcohol to talk to girls is all in his head, so maybe the one sip is all he needs.

Agreed. The second season episode The Terminator Decoupling shows that Raj’s problem is psychological. He is talking freely to Summer Glau before becoming mute and making a quick exit when he finds out that the beer he was drinking was actually non-alcoholic. I don’t find this episode to be against his character, as it seems that he only needs one sip in order to speak. This was shown in another episode as well, though I don’t remember which at the moment.

I believe it was the episode in which Raj was applying for a position with another Professor to avoid being deported, and learned he would be working alongside a woman. A single sip transfomed him from being mute to incurring a sexual harassment charge.

Martha seems perfect for Sheldon. I agree with you – I wouldn’t mind seeing more of them together. I really like the pairing of Bernadette and Howard. I think it would be fantastic if their relationship lasts, because it would be ironic that Howard of all people finds true love.
