This week’s Shark Tank nibblets: shirts, pillows and wipes

Alright, so these guys really know how to bring down a budding entrepreneur like nobody’s business, but as I said before, it’s fun to watch the ideas and business that get presented. So, let’s take a look at those that were presented tonight, shall we?

The business: The Factionist
The presenter: Nate Berkopec
The product: Environmentally-friendly T-shirts with a message.
My take on the idea and pitch: Huge kudos to a 19-year-old for coming up with an idea with a positive message and taking it to the Sharks. Problem is, the shirts have nothing unique about them. The sayings aren’t unique, the fonts are plain and unoriginal. Where’s the art? It looks like a comfortable, washable sandwich-board! Nate’s got a really good pitch voice, but man, those shirts are a snooze fest. (Word is Barbara Corcoran hired Nate after the show anyway.)

The business: The PODillow
The presenters: Anthony Calvert and Tina Calvert
The product: Face-down tanning and massage pillow.
My take on the idea and pitch: I like that they have a place to keep your wallet and money, since your eyes are completely covered when lying in this thing. I’ve had the problem they’re talking about when I was a beach nut many suns ago, so this is a really decent idea. Only problem with the pitch was the WAY overvalue of the business. Sounds like these two are fine on their own and just need to reinvest properly. Not really sure why they couldn’t change their valuation on the spot.

The business: Wee Can Shop
The presenter: Matthew and Kimberly Foley
The product: A store for kids to buy things for their friends and loved ones.
My take on the idea and pitch. Very cute idea … for a local business. I cannot imagine this being successful as a chain. The pitch … or dear God, the pitch. Well, brother Matthew looked so nervous he was about to vomit, so I guess all we had was Kim’s storytime pitch.

The business: Grease Monkey Wipes
The presenters: Tim Stansbury and Erin Whalen
The product: All-natural cleaning wipes.
My take on the idea and pitch: Working on a bike on the road is disgusting work, especially if you’re commuting to work, so I get that having wipes that work is a great idea. The money they were asking for sounded reasonable, since I don’t think the Sharks ever took a deal less than around 50% of the company before. By the way, it’s a well known fact that citrus oils are a fantastic, natural cleaner, so I’m not sure a patent would stick. Good pitch, though.

One of the ‘rules’ is that they have to get all the money they are asking for, otherwise they get nothing. That’s why the PODillow people could not reevaluate their company and ask for less.

Now, having said that, this week’s Dragon’s Den in Canada did allow a entrepreneur to redo their evaluation. That was the first time they allowed that to happen.

Hi there, it’s Kimberly from Wee Can Shop!
Just wanted to clear a few things up, which I have spent countless hours doing since the show aired!
Wee Can Shop is not just a gift shop, we host one-of-a-kind shopping birthday parties and have a great ecommerce website.www.WeeCanShop.com..Unfortunaley everything we have to offer did not get aired, and America just thought we are a little gift shop but we are so much more. Kids Birthday Parties are highly franchisable on their own and we have more to offer than just birthday parties,we offer the ONLY shopping experience for children thats fun and educational. Wee Can Shop is a triple threat and America needs a new retail chain, oh and yes my brother was nervous! LOL
