I keep saying that the more I watch Castle, the more I like it. Fortunately, this time, it would seem I’m not alone. This is nothing like that time that the more I watched Shasta McNasty, the more I liked it. Castle, it would seem, is slowly building its ratings. Last week, the demo numbers were higher than for most of the episodes following Dancing With The Stars. That’s a great sign as we hope for a third season. With episodes like “Sucker Punch” I suspect they’ll continue to grow. What a great show.
On the heels of last week’s revelations about Castle’s past, it was time to delve into the biggest mystery from Beckett’s. That being the death of her mother. I always assumed it was something we would get to eventually, but I didn’t imagine it would be so much, so quick. Those reservations about how long it would take for the story to play out figured quite prominently as my inner-detective (I call him Basil) went to work on the mystery.
The brother, Dick (Jay R. Ferguson) was an easy suspect. — Side-note to CC chatters: He’s not the guy from October Road. I suspect you’re thinking of Brad Henke (Going To California!). Jay Ferguson is the guy from Surface. — The great twist to this story though, was that even if you correctly landed on Dick right away, it probably wasn’t for the right reason.
I was sold on Dick immediately, and totally on board with him ordering the hit. And I completely fell for the Wrathbourne ruse. The reason being, I really didn’t think they’d give up the killer of Beckett’s mother quite so soon. — Side-note, part deux, to CC chatters: CJCubs totally called that Dick was Wrathbourne. Fifty points, Gryffindor! — The way it was all playing out, it looked like we would get a good bit of information, before putting the case to rest for a while again.
And, I suppose, in the end that is what happened, just not how I thought it would go down. With Beckett killing Dick, she got the guy. But not before a whole new chapter to the story was opened up. Clearly, if someone went to the lengths of hiring a professional hit-man to kill her mother, there’s something big there. I’m sure we’ll get back to that story, eventually. And that’s okay by me. It was great progress in and of itself, and it gives me every confidence that the story will be paid off.
If that wasn’t enough, it was also a big night for the Castle/Beckett relationship. Things were great right from the start, with Beckett telling Castle to, “Keep your mouth shut and try and butch it up.” The big moments, however, came as Castle immediately ponied up the cash to trap Wrathbourne, and that great scene after it was all done. Those things just speak volumes about where their relationship has gone.
“I’ve gotten used to you pulling my pigtails.” That might be my favorite scene of the television season so far. It was a very sweet moment, but also summed up everything we’ve seen between the two of them so far in the series. The whole thing played as if we were finishing the last pages of a book. And now, we’re all anxiously awaiting the next volume of the series. Good lord, I love this show.
I say minus 50 points for continued referencing him as the “October Sky” guy.

That’s very Slytherin of you… :D
I would have given a hundred points for anyone referencing Going To California. That’s my #3 most wanted TV DVD set.
I’d love to see a post from you, Brett, with your top TV on DVD wishlists. You watch shows I’ve never even heard of, and if Supernatural and Castle are examples of your fine taste, then I want to know what else I’ve been missing! :-)

I can totally do that. The top 4 are set. I’ll have to do the math to get things in order for the rest of the list.
Yeah yeah yeah. Don’t think anyone corrected it to Surface dude.
