TV on DVD – Emma, Stargate, and the unmarried Gary

TV on DVD releases for February 9 include: Emma, Stargate Universe, Army Wives, Gary Unmarried, Jockeys, Jag Fraggle Rock, and Vega$.

This week’s list of TV on DVD releases is a bit on the short side, but you’ll still find a few gems tucked away in there. For current shows, Stargate Universe, Army Wives, Gary Unmarried, Jockeys, and Sarah Silverman are all available. There are also a few oldies, but goodies, including JAG, Fraggle Rock, and Vega$. And then we have my pick of the week, the latest adaptation of Jane Austen’s Emma.

It’s been done a number of times before on the stage, and on the big and small screens. That’s okay though, because Emma is good every time. My favorite version is the stage production I saw at the Book-It Repertory Theatre last year. However, considering that we can’t get that one on DVD, this latest edition is now my filmed favorite. Featuring Romola Garai (Emma), Jonny Lee Miller (Mr. Knightley), and Michael Gambon (Mr. Woodhouse), it is Emma exactly as it should be. The full list for the week is after the jump.

  • Stargate Universe: SG-U 1.0 (Blu-ray) – You know what I hate more than split seasons? Split season DVD releases.
  • Army Wives: The Complete 3rd Season – Enter to win this set from CliqueClack!
  • Gary Unmarried: The Complete 1st Season – I’m still waiting for Gary to get a proper shot on Mondays… You can enter to win this set from CliqueClack as well.
  • The Sarah Silverman Program: Season 2, Volume 2 – Sarah wetting the bed, driving for bin Laden, and marrying her dog. Good family fun.
  • Jockeys: Season 2 – Much better than your first impression might suggest.
  • JAG: The Final Season – Flash back to see how it all wound up for Harm and Mac.
  • Fraggle Rock: Wembley’s Egg Surprise – Marjory the Trash Heap decides to teach the Fraggles, Doozers and Gorgs a lesson by magically making all the radishes in the Gorgs’ garden disappear!
  • Second Sight: Complete Collection – Inspector Ross Tanner (Clive Owen) is a workaholic cop with a rare disorder causing intermittent blindness and hallucinations.
  • Vega$: The 1st Season, Vol. 2 – Unfortunately, another split season set… Still, Dan Tanna was the man.
  • Rod Serling: Studio One Dramas – “The Arena” and “The Strike” Two dramas written for Studio One by Rod Serling.
  • The Dorkhunters from Outer Space: The The Animated Series – Art imitates life as we learn that the planet has been invaded by Dorks.
  • The Life & Times of Tim: The Complete 1st Season – Valuable, animated life lessons, like… What happens when your girlfriend comes home before your hooker has left?
  • Maneater: mini-series – Staring 32 in the face, Clarissa (Sarah Chalke) hatches a plan to get a ring on that finger.
  • The Patty Duke Show: Season 2 – That’s all 36 episodes of season 2. 36… Can you imagine if we could get 36 episodes a season now?
  • The Penguins of Madagascar: Operation DVD Premiere – Kid friendly animation. I’ve been assured that at no time will someone be caught with a hooker.

Brett, do you feel the Garai/Miller Emma to be superior to my current favorite, the Beckinsale/Strong A&E version? If so, I would have to pick it up, although it seems to be a bit pricey right now.

The comment below was meant as a reply to Ryan. So this one is just serving to kick off the email notification that I replied. :D

With the obvious caveat that your mileage may vary, I do think the Garai/Miller version is superior. Although, not so much because of them. More than anything else, it’s a case of the years passing and bringing with them an increase in production values. This one just looks and feels better. And even though I would say it’s superior, it’s not what I would call world’s better than the Beckinsale/Strong version. As I said, Emma is always good. This latest adaptation is just a small upgrade over those that came before.

Definitely worth adding to the collection. But if you already have the Beckinsale version, you’d still be perfectly fine to wait for a sale. Or, if you are in the US, I think you can still catch the whole thing on the PBS site. Part 1 is still streaming as I type this.

Heh, one of the many reasons I prefer Beckinsale/Strong to Paltrow/Northam was that the former looked shabbier, dirtier, and more lived-in. I was just wondering if you had seen it for comparison’s sake, and also like Emma in any form or adaptation.

Thanks for the recommendation, and I’ve added it to my wishlist for my family/friends who don’t know what to buy me.

Oh, Emma! In my former life, I was an English lit. major with an emphasis on Austen and Bronte, so I love me anything Emma…. I haven’t seen this version yet, but it’s now on my list too!
