It was one of those weeks on Castle. What I mean by that is that I wasn’t really that drawn in by the case of the week. It was a little procedural-by-numbers. Not bad mind you, but not anything that really grabbed me. There was the nice clue early on when Cecily (Erin Cahill, who really needs a regular TV gig) noted how Wolf was really sweet. For those most part though, pretty standard stuff.
However … what makes those weeks a good thing on Castle are all of those other little things spinning around the case. Much of that, of course, had to do with the ongoing story of Castle and Beckett, and whether or not Beckett wants “to make little Castle babies.” It’s a game that can’t go on forever, but at this point I still find it all so damn charming that I can’t stop watching it.
The latest roadblock, Det. Demming (Michael Trucco), has now completely won me over. Not that I want Beckett to end up with him, but I think Kate had it just right in the comments last week. He’s a good guy. There’s no real reason, other than that he isn’t Castle, to not like him. It makes him a worthy adversary. And even if we all agree that it can’t last, it’s understandable why Beckett may be momentarily distracted.
That distraction isn’t 100% though, as we saw when Castle started to hit it off with Madison (Julie Gonzalo). The writers are actually doing a good job of capturing that slight jealousy that Beckett has whenever any other woman is sniffing around. We see it, but it’s not overly dramatic, or over done. And to this point, it’s working well with their story. The same is true on the flipside when we see Castle’s reaction to Demming. I stand by the prediction that we’ll get some sort of development on all this in the finale, and I am very much enjoying the ride that will get us there.
In addition, we also had another little peek at the ever more eventful past of Beckett. “Beck’s never had a type.” Grunge guitarists … med students … French royalty … Saved By The Bell reruns … We’re going to have to have a serious flashback episode at some point. On Castle’s end, we got the fantastic Dr. Horrible laugh, and yet another example of him being the perfect dad. That last bit was especially well timed. As just after Beckett pondered the decision Cecily had to make, Castle rushed off to be with Alexis.
So, despite a less than remarkable case, I’m still marking this one down as another great entry. The longer I watch the show, the less important the whodunit becomes. At this point, those cases are mostly just the framework that gives our characters something to do. And that is a very good sign.
I couldn’t agree more with your review. I think the case was meant to mirror Beckett’s conflicted feelings for Castle though. The girl chose the safe choice rather than the risky one. I’m hoping Beckett doesn’t do the same because as Castle said, “The heart wants what the heart wants.” I love, love, love this show!
I agree about the murder cases only being the framework to see Caslte and Beckett interact. I started watching because of them and that is what keeps me comming back each week. I loved all the hints this week about Kate’s past, just more to let us know how much her mother’s death changed her.
