Oh my. Those few seconds represented by the post title and the screencap were the big development this week, but there was certainly a lot of fun to be had in getting there. The somewhat awkward rivalry that is evolving between Castle and Demming made quite the adventure out of what could have otherwise been another run of the mill case. OK, run of the mill case, plus Benny (Stephen Full), because Benny was hilarious.
I was on board with the dueling murder theories from the moment Castle wiped the stolen books off the big board. It was so fun to watch both of them defend their own version of how it all happened, and to see the crushing blow play out on their faces when something went right on the other side. Both Fillion and Trucco were very good at that, but my favorite moment was when Castle and Beckett ran down how Rebecca Strong (Jennifer Hall) could have done it. Demming was left speechless by that very Castle/Beckett (we’re not going to refer to them as Caskett, are we?) moment. And for that brief time, Castle was clearly in the lead.
Of course, as the picture shows, that didn’t last. After a few twists and turns, both of them got their murderer, but it was ultimately Beckett who cracked the case. That seems just about perfect. Because much like this case, the kerfuffle between Castle and Demming is also going to come down to her. Isn’t that what has to go down in the big finale next week? As we saw with Castle’s actions this week, he’s finally turned that corner and knows that it’s now or never. He has to say something. And that will leave Beckett in a very tough position.
Tough, because there is the obvious chemistry with Castle. But Demming is also a great guy, and it’s hard to argue against that. I think the fact that the show isn’t called Demming might be our first clue as to how this is all going to end up for Detective Tom. Still, I’ve very much enjoyed the ride to get us to the tipping point, and I’m really looking forward to seeing how it all plays out in the big finale. Good grief, is it really season finale time?
Finally, we also learned a valuable lesson about shaving constantly. Fear of permanent capillary damage is why I haven’t been clean shaven since 1992. Yeah, that’s the ticket.
I loved this episode. It had a lot of funny moments; Benny was great. I liked how the kiss at the end was just a short ‘see ya later’ kind of kiss, casual but still telling, but I really felt for Castle in that scene too. I can’t wait for next week.
