NCIS: Los Angeles – Trust isn’t easy

Well, it’s official it seems, Kensi and Deeks are in a relationship … I mean they are partners. Previously, it was never made clear that they were working together permanently. Back in my post on “Special Delivery,” I mentioned that I hoped the pairings of Sam/Callen and Kensi/Deeks weren’t permanent. After a few more episodes, I’ve changed my mind. I like the dynamic of Sam and Callen and am growing to like Kensi and Deeks together. Though, I really hope their relationship remains only a professional one. It would be nice to have a male-female partnership on television that doesn’t explore the romantic path.

The case of the week fit in perfectly with the question of trust. Not only did Kensi and Deeks face their lack of trust in each other, we saw the high level of trust between Sam and Callen. This was also demonstrated with the familial trust issues between Thomas, his son, and his brother-in-law.

I dig the characters and their relationships with each other. That is what differentiates this show from other procedurals. Each week, we get to see the characters grow and get insight into them. It isn’t just about the case of the week, but the agents involved as well.

In “Bounty,” we had Taliban in California. I’m not sure what to make of that. It’s kinda scary to think that Taliban could be wandering the streets of Los Angeles hunting down newly retired military personnel. But, that was not the most surprising reveal of the night. How heartless would someone have to be to kill his own brother-in-law over a $10 million bounty? Well, I guess if the brother-in-law was a torturer, he was probably lacking in the “heart” category. And, isn’t money one of the most common motives for murder? This murder seemed especially brutal.

Deeks and Kensi’s talk in the car opened them up to trusting each other. I’m not sure which gesture was more important, Deeks offering Kensi his gun, or her dismissal of the offer. I’m loving Kensi and Deeks more every episode (which means don’t be surprised to see me write, by the end of the season, that I want them together romantically, even though I previously said I didn’t want that).

Notes and Quotes:

• The Deeks and Kensi banter at the firing range was perfect. Unfortunately it was too long to transcribe here. I did watch that scene quite a few times.
• Nice play by Hetty to tell Kensi and Deeks a fake story about how Callen and Sam became to fully trust each other. I bought it.
• “Take a look” – Deeks holding his gun up to Kensi
  “Maybe some other time” – Kensi
• The last scene with Deeks, Callen, and Sam was awkwardly awesome.
