After last week’s fantastic Twin Peaks episode of Psych, when I saw that Ralph Macchio would be in this episode, I thought for sure it’d be riddled with Karate Kid references. By my count, though, there were only two: One was Shawn calling Conforth (Macchio) “sensei,” and the other was when Shawn told Conforth not to “wax on about it.” Did I miss any?
Not only did we get some Karate Kid references, but there were Police Academy and Top Gun moments thrown in as well, which make sense being that the latter two are “academy” movies. Bring on the ’80s movies!
I still get bugged from time to time that Shawn and Gus are able to float along on police investigations without being armed or, actually, not being licensed law enforcement. In time, though, I’ve let go of that gripe, since the show is just so funny at times and not at all meant to be taken very seriously. I thought for sure we’d have that issue addressed quite a bit in this episode, but its surface was barely scratched upon.
For those of you wondering where the pineapple was in this episode, it’s in the image above, during the grocery store shoot-out. You’re welcome.
“Listen, your program breaks down as follows. A third will be spent in the classroom, a third will involve field work and one third will be focused on physical training.” – Officer Conforth
“What about the other third?” – Shawn
“Are you kidding?” – Gus
“Never mind. Surprise us.” – Shawn
“‘The hell, Conforth. You can’t beat me on the field so now you’re trying to beat me off?” – Lassiter
“You may want to rephrase that, sir.” – Shawn
