America’s Next Top Model cycle 16 participants

You wanna be on top? 'ANTM' will keep its high fashion focus with guest judges Rachel Zoe and Alex Wek. Interested in learning the prize pack and who made the cut? Clack on!

Below find America’s Next Top Model’s participants for The CW’s cycle 16. I don’t plan on covering it, but I like to keep my hand in the till. Whenever ANTM features an awesome series, I become wary of the cycle immediately following it. Honestly, I wish Tyra would slow down to only one cycle a year to maintain quality. The fall featured such a strong package overall with judges, models, and the prizes, I wonder if they can maintain it. The other reason I wish Tyra had waited is because Ann Ward only just started with IMG, and hasn’t had enough time to get her career going with them. Plus, her Vogue spread won’t release until May 2011 (even if a livejournal poster revealed that IMG features Ann on its main model board).

Interestingly, this new cycle will continue the focus on high fashion with Rachel Zoe, Alek Wek, IMG Models’ Ivan Bart, and Vogue Italia editor-in-chief Franca Sozzani as guest judges. Plus, the prize pack will still include a contract with IMG Models; a fashion spread in Vogue Italia and an additional spread and cover of Beauty in Vogue; and a $100,000 contract with CoverGirl Cosmetics. Just like cycle 15, one of the oldest models is coincidentally the one with the most experience.

I definitely didn’t mourn the loss of drama in cycle 15. While I love plus size models and Whitney did a great job, people credited her size with her win and not her talent. Although Tyra will bring in Kasia, one of Wilhelmina’s plus models, considering Kasia’s age (26) and size (not anoxeric), I could see episodes and reviews focusing on her weight over her capabilities. Finally, with one of the models as an active Planned Parenthood participant, another with a fear of modeling with sharks, and several with an interest in snowboarding (which I find slightly dubious) and confidence in their walks (despite their mostly amateur status), I expect the return of a lot of drama. Oddly, most of this cycle’s participants hail from the south, specifically Texas.

You know, my drama teacher in High School told us a story of when he was still working as an actor in LA and one of his friends got him on the remake of The Dating Game. When they asked him what his job was, he said he was an actor, but mentioned maybe moving back to the midwest to teach drama. So when he went on the show, they introduced him as a teacher. I have to at least appreciate that the ANTM producers admit that the majority of these girls have no jobs.

I have to admit, I like that as well. Or, I like the honesty of the girls in not pretending they’re doing something else –
