One thing that always fascinates me is how television shows handle geography. There are loads of shows that are filmed in one location that take place somewhere entirely different. That disconnect often brings some bizarre results. For me, trying to follow just where the hell John Doe was going, or hearing the cast of iCarly try to say Yakima, are a couple of good examples of things going awry. On occasion though, there is a little nugget of brilliance mixed in there, and I think The Killing has one.
You may recall a scene earlier in the series (“A Soundless Echo“) where Richmond (Billy Campbell) speaks with a local billionaire, Tom Drexler (Patrick Gilmore), on the balcony. At one point Drexler laments that he never got to build his stadium. Now, we have like a billion dollars worth of football and baseball stadiums downtown. So what the heck was he going to be building? More importantly, the story of how they got there is not something that is easily overlooked. I immediately chalked this up to another show that didn’t quite get it right. But wait, there’s more.
Fast forward to this week’s episode (“What You Have Left”), and it gets really cool. When Richmond is at the TV studio for the interview with the mayor there is a shot of the Seattle skyline in the background. There’s the Space Needle. And Mount Rainier. And the frickin’ KINGDOME! How cool is that? In the world of The Killing, the new football stadium never got built, and the world is still blessed with all 7.85 acres of that amazing concrete roof. Whether you like The Killing or not. And whether you liked the Kingdome or not. That is a fascinating attention to detail. A tip of my Mariners trident cap to the powers that be at The Killing.
