Oh … the characters in New Girl:
And then there’s Schmidt.
Schmidt is a freak. He’s the dippiest kind of freak, too. He’s like a nerd who’s just trying too hard to be accepted … to fit in. Desperately. It’s obsessive with him. Why else would he go to a baby shower of all things?
Look: I’ve been to a baby shower or two. One particular event I went to was against my will. (I think I lost a bet, if memory serves.) I’m certain there are fun, frolickous, festive baby showers out there in the world a man can attend, but I’m unwilling to explore this particular idea just to verify it. What Schmidt did at his boss Gina’s shower, however, is probably along the lines of what I would have done in younger days. Something to get the “juices flowing” at a dour, lifeless party. You know, something to jazz things up. Good job. It was Schmidt personified. The perfect “him.” It doesn’t relieve the guy from his standing in the show as a freak in my book with his over-the-top ideas and strange vernacular … but I give him props just the same.
Remember I said Jess can perplex someone just as easily as endear herself? Was there any better representation of this than the monkey business she pulled with Paul during all their foreplay? The poor guy didn’t know which way was up with all her antics and insecurities about sex. (Paul’s Jimmy Stewart role play? Strange and outstanding in its way …)
Last week’s episode of New Girl left me dry. I honestly didn’t like it at all. But this week’s hit a home run and put things back on track.
Notes:
Quotes:
“So head’s up: Paul’s coming tonight. I’m going to tap him like a maple tree. I’m going to be searching for some syrup.” — Jess revealing her intentions with Paul to the guys
“Hey old man … where’d you steal those pants? Danny Glover’s grandfather?” — Nick to the men in the barbershop
“I am Danny Glover’s grandfather …” (long, awkward, uncomfortable silence) “I’m not really Danny Glover’s grandfather! Bwah-Hah-Hah!” — One faux offended patron pulling a fast one
This ep confirmed that Jess used to be a chubby girl (I don’t remember if that came up before in the show), which explains why she doesn’t seem to think of herself as beautiful like Cece, even though she clearly is.
I haven’t noticed the flats, but she’s better off with flat feet than with a deformed spine.
I’m up and down with this show. I WANT to love it. I think I see too much of myself in Jess. That scares me.
Is that actually danny glover at the end?
