New Girl – The freshman finale wraps up nicely

A nice, funny 'New Girl' season finale ends with the sweet sounds of ... AC/DC. (And again, I could have sworn Nick was going to get pecked by Jess ... or vice versa.)

- Season 1, Episode 24 - "See Ya"

Way back when in my review of the pilot of New Girl I said: “I predict I’ll be enjoying this show right to the very last of the season. I’m not fooling myself: I do expect bumps in the road, but comedicly speaking I think I’m going to get my money’s worth.”

Have I? The answer is yes.

New Girl is still fresh in my mind and funny 24 episodes later. Oh, sure … there have been some bumps in the road. “Injured” pretty much sucked and I didn’t like what Jess was in “Tomatoes” to name a few recent episodes. There have been dribs and drabs of dopey plot lines and downright stupid dialog and messy situations in the show, but overall it’s been a fun freshman season.

I have a relationship with the characters, more so with Nick and Winston and Schmidt than I do with Jess. There are certain things about Jess that bug me. Her shoes. Her dippy little asides. The way the writers “dumb her down” on occasion. (And this chapter’s roadrunner/coyote sequence was just eye rolling.) Yet … I liked that there was a little flashback about her ringing a triangle to let the guys know she was “in the library.” It’s the little things which crop up I like that make it feel fresh and entertaining, not forced.

I love Nick. And Schmidt’s carrying on about things important only to him are more a crack up than not. Winston comes up with some outstanding lines, too.

So … this little “grand experiment” with New Girl? Well … I’m going to keep right on going with it. I’m not into fluffy comedies much, but this one’s got more than the usual suspects. And I’m enjoying it.

Besides … when we have creepy little marionettes like the one in the photo above on the lookout for intruders, what’s not to like?

Notes:

  • Loved that Nick, without a word, showed back up to the loft, having decided not to move in with Caroline.
  • Schmidt kisses Nick “goodbye.” Classic.
  • I enjoyed the little mess the writers left us with on the Schmidt / Cece front.
  • New Girl wraps up with AC/DC. I can’t think of a better season ender.

Quotes:

“I loved the way he smelled.” — Remy the landlord to Jess about Nick

“How’s the new apartment? Does it smell like new paint and compromise?” — Jess to Schmidt on the phone about Nick’s new place

‘We need to talk …” — Schmidt to Cece
“Not another ‘Merlot is the whore of the vineyard’ talk … is it?” — Cece

“How am I supposed to trust you Cece? You slept with me. That doesn’t say much about your taste in men.” — Schmidt

I love this show. I am a multi-tasker usually doing something while watching tv..but this show..you have to pay attention. There is so much going on all the time. Between the quick quips and all the faces being made you can’t look away.
Schmidt’s line to Cece was a little heartbreaking for me as it seemed to be to Cece too. They may have started off as a one-night stand but they have feelings for each other.
I don’t know how many times I thought Nick would kiss Jess last night..they are sooo right for each other! Her beep beeps made me laugh though!

. . . . .

Toni:

On first preview, I, too, had to chuckle at the Wile E. Coyote/Roadrunner schtick.

But it was still dopey …

Although my brother and I typically think alike, on gender issues, I’m always shocked that despite his #-year marriage, his #-year-old daughter and having me as his sister, he still “thinks like a man.” Despite the posts you share with “Tara,” I fear I might have to apply the same to you.

However, I won’t fight you about Jess’s shoes (which I love), her clothes (which I heart), or her behavior (which sometimes I do). Instead, I will agree that New Girl is awesome and definitely deserves its second season. Although Jess and Nick will eventually get together, I’m glad the season finale didn’t end on that note.

P.S. I don’t care what the mice say, that IS one snazzy suit.
