Is Smallville jumping the shark with Lois and Clark getting closer?

The CW

The CW

If you are a fan of The CW’s Smallville, you probably noticed that the series is more than ever going forward with Clark Kent becoming Superman. Clark is now a reporter at the Daily Planet, he is working with Lois and the bond between Lois and Clark is starting to form.

Smallville has had a way of twisting the Superman mythology and rewriting the characters’ history, and fans have grown to accept it (even if not always agreeing with it). Since the series debuted, fans of Lana and Clark have been very vocal and supportive: they wanted the couple to live a happy ending even if in Superman’s mythology the “Clana” was never meant to last beyond school years. When Erica Durance joined the series as Lois, some fans were enraged as it would not only come in the way of Lana and Clark but it was way too early for Lois to show up in the series. So now that Lana is gone (she’ll be back for about four episodes though) and Lois is a well-established character in the series, is Smallville jumping the shark with Lois and Clark getting closer?

As a fan of the series Lois & Clark, someone who watched the Superman movies a few times each, and a fan who’s been accepting that Smallville will not follow Superman’s mythology, I am happy to see that the series is slowly having Lois and Clark grow closer. The latest episodes, especially this week’s, have created moments for the two characters to bond together and start to develop feelings (Lois admitted to loving Clark and it’s clear he is starting to like her too). My eagerness to see the two of them take things to the next step may also be caused by the fact I hated Lana since the first episode of the series. She is in a special “characters whose mouths I want shut” category I created and which includes characters such as Meredith from Grey’s Anatomy. Therefore, I want Clark and Lois together so he can forget once and for all about annoying and boring Lana.

On the other hand, I enjoy seeing Clark and Lois circle around one another and throw snarky comments at the other. If they start dating, will those funny scenes be a thing of the past?

What is your take on Lois and Clark? Do you think the show is jumping the shark by having them grow closer together, or is it about time L&C get romantic? Let your voice be heard in comments below!

I think they jumped the gun when they introduced Lois while Clark was still in HS (or was it frosh yr of college). However, now that he’s working at the DP full time it seems natural. My only complaint is Welling and Durance don’t have too much on-screen chemistry so it feels forced -

Really? I think that Welling and Durance have great screen chemistry. And it’s finally coming to the fore.

I enjoy the change, you can only have so much deviation from mythology of the character before it gets ridiculous. Plus how long before he becomes superman, to much longer as smallville and the show would have become stagnant. Its the natural and a good choice as the show begins to reach an end to have him evolve and bring about the lois relationship.

I love that they’re going down this path. Also, it’s about damn time someone covers it too. I know everyone hates that they decided to do an 8th season but I love what’s happening so far. The way that Lois looked (honest, sincere, etc) when she said that she loved Clark was just awesome! If Clark actually believes her (from the elevator scene) he’s a fool.

Oh yeah, I have a list like yours, except its a “characters I wish would die & go away” list. It, like yours, includes Lana & Meredith. Damn I hate both of these characters so much!

The show jumped many sharks before this season.

This show has jumped many sharks but I dont think this is one of them. I however dont think they should jump right into the relationship. They should continue the odd-couple reporter dynamic and have the liking each other by the series finale.

Also by last season I dont think there was a single viewer that didnt want Lana to get off the show.

I guess my problem is that the episode has set up the Lois & Clark relationship as edging towards romantic much too soon. Lois’s equivocal explanation of how she was able to beat the lie detector is meant to set up romantic tension. However shoe could have just as easily said something like “I do love you Smallville….like the brother I never had.” I can see Lois and Clark having a deep and abiding friendship at this stage but in just about every interpretation of the Superman story – going back to 1938 in fact – the relationship between the two is a mix of competitors and close but platonic friends while the principal romantic relationship has always been Lois and Superman, until she realizes that she can’t have Superman. But right now we don’t have Superman.

Much too soon? The show has been edging its way toward a Clark/Lois romance since they first slapped eyes upon each other in Season 4. Frankly, I wish it had happened sooner.
