Crash – Tom Sizemore shows up; the girl from Invasion is Ben’s daughter

(Season 1, Episode 9 – “Pissing in the Sandbox”)

Geez, I really wish Kari Matchett would land somewhere and stay for a while. I’ve had a big ole girl-crush on her since her Invasion days, and she’s been in and out of several TV shows since then, including 24, Studio 60, and ER. She deserves her own show.

Now she shows up in Crash as Ben’s daughter, Jules (great casting, by the way), and the two have a very rocky history. When Ben wants back into the music company after being gone for seven years, she’s understandably annoyed. He SAYS he’s only coming back to get Anthony’s music career underway; of course, Ben always has ulterior motives.

It will be fun to see Ben and Jules one-up each other with the verbal sparring. I’d say Jules is scoring higher at the moment, when she tells Ben, “You take one step closer, and I swear I’ll kick you in the balls.” Aw, now that’s some sweet father-daughter bonding.

Jules knows her dad pretty well, and tells Anthony that he has a history of going on and off the wagon. He can come back, she says, but Anthony’s in charge of him, and they’re out the door when Ben starts waving a weapon and yelling at people.

Meanwhile Bebe and Kenny are shacking up – not that kind of shacking up, but just because Amy tossed Kenny out on his ass after he admitted to sleeping with Inez. Amy has NO idea who her husband really is! But others do. When he tries to score some skin at a sex club, the lap-dancer gives him the brush-off. I wonder if they heard about his crabs problem. He is one hot mess.

The new kid in the precinct is Tom Sizemore as Detective Adrian Cooper. He’s investigating Axel’s shooting and whatever else he can dig up – which is plenty. I can understand Axel saying that he and the Korean mob guys keep out of each others’ way, but clearly, he’s a dirty cop.

Tom Sizemore is one of those actors who, whenever he’s on-screen, I can’t take my eyes off him. Seems like he always goes deep into whatever character he’s playing, to the point where I forget that he’s acting.

His story is interwoven with Eddie and the young girl he helped in this episode. I feel for Eddie, because he truly seems to have moved beyond his gang days, but he’s pigeonholed now and can’t get into med school through the normal channels. But getting help via organized crime obviously isn’t the answer either.

It just goes to show that no matter how hard you try to reach your goals, sometimes it’s hard to get past your surroundings and lot in life. It’ll be interesting to see what happens when Eddie goes up against Mr. Park.
