See Jane Clack – Dog the Bounty Hunter, Survivorman, and The Cosby Show

Dog the Bounty Hunter is a rough gem. Over the holidays, I saw Dog the Bounty Hunter on On the Record with Greta Van Susteren. Wow, that guy looks like nine miles of bad road, doesn’t he? But it was sweet how he called Greta “ma’am” and was so polite and gentlemanly. Despite his rough looks and questionable past, Dog really seems to have a good heart, and Lord knows he’s got the bounty biz down pat. Things were going great until the interview was over and he signed off from Hawaii with “Obama Country!” That seemed a little awkward for Greta. Anyway, check out Dog the Bounty Hunter on A&E. It’s rough fun.

Those slippery floors on The Biggest Loser made me crazy. We faithfully watched The Biggest Loser this season, and loved seeing everyone get healthy and change their lives for the better. But the season finale made us grip our chairs with suspense. Not because we wanted to see who’d win — we pretty much knew Michelle had it in the bag — but because of those slippery floors on the stage.  Every time a female contestant emerged in her fancy dress and high heels, she was in dire peril of skating across the floor and landing on her nicely-toned butt. Thank goodness Bob Harper was there to help the ladies across the floor. Next time, think about sticking some of those non-skid grippers to the bottom of your shoes, girls. After all that work, you don’t want to end up in the hospital with a broken rib or something.

The Cosby Show doesn’t seem realistic. Our latest DVD obsession is The Cosby Show on DVD, led by my 11-year-old daughter. We love watching the show, filled with humor, warmth and love, but  it seems completely unrealistic to me. How in the world do Cliff and Clair find time to do all that fun stuff with their family? He’s a doctor and she’s a lawyer. Both of these are demanding careers that would leave any real-life parent stressed out, gone all the time, and grouchy when they’re around. Yet these two super-parents find time to choreograph elaborate song-and-dance routines for birthdays and anniversaries (including Ray Charles’ “Night Time is the Right Time”), hold mock trials when the kids screw up, and invite adult friends over for cut-throat pinochle games. In one episode, Cliff and Clair decide to teach Theo lessons about life in the real world, so they move ALL the furniture and stuff out of his room, leaving it bare and empty! I know it’s a TV show, but really, this stuff just doesn’t happen with any parents I’ve ever known. We’re too stressed out and tired to get this creative in our parenting. On the plus side, it’s nice to see TV kids who actually screw up and have to face the consequences.

Survivorman is a little crazy. We’re crazy for Survivorman on the Discovery Channel, but you’ve gotta wonder if Les Stroud is a little out there — and I’m not just talking geographically. In each episode, he gets dropped off in the middle of nowhere with no food, no shelter, and no fresh water. His only chance of survival rests in his wits and sheer will. It’s not just the scorpions, lions and snakes he encounters, it’s the truly gross stuff he’s willing to do. A recent episode found him in the desert peeing into a hole in the sand for drinking water. He figured out how to create a condensation gizmo that would filter out the bad stuff so he could drink his own pee. Ewwwww! And you have to think he’s harboring some serious bacteria in his intestines after eating God knows what on his adventures. On the other hand, if we ever crash-land in the Amazon or Kalahari, we’ve probably got a better shot at surviving, so … thanks, Les.

Sharon Osbourne needs some charm school lessons. I love Sharon Osbourne as much as the next girl, but it seems a little ironic that she’d (allegedly) get into a catfight with one of the girls on her reality show, Rock of Love Charm School. Contestant Megan Hauserman apparently filed a police report alleging that Sharon pulled her hair during a taping of the show, and TMZ snagged a photo of the chunk of missing hair. The girls are there to learn a few lessons in manners, but maybe Sharon needs to go back to charm school herself.

What about you? What made you clack this week?
