Smallville – What is Lana’s end game?

lana20090125(Season 8, Episode 12, “Bulletproof”)

It’s no secret — I hate Lana Lang. Well, to be more precise, I hate the Smallville version of Lana Lang and have since the first episode ever of the series. Over the years, I’ve learned to tolerate the character. Imagine my joy when it was confirmed last year that Kristin Kreuk wasn’t returning to the series! Sadly, my “Lana Lang is gone” party was cut short when the network announced the actress would appear in a few episodes of season eight.

Since her reappearance in episode 8.10, we haven’t learned much about what Lana has been up to between the season seven finale and episode “Bride.” However, this week’s “Bulletproof” started to pave the way for some revelations set to unfold in next week’s episode. Until then, let’s compile what we learned about Lana 2.0 and make a few predictions, shall we?When Lana reappeared in “Bride,” I was pretty sure that she was in cahoots with Lex. As I mentioned in my review of the episode back in November, I thought that Lana not only sent Lex footage of the wedding but also thought that maybe she was the one who found Lex.

After seeing “Bulletproof,” I’m not so sure of my first assumptions anymore. If Lana does work for Lex, it makes no sense to have her tell Tess about the optical implant that allows Lex to see everything Tess is seeing. Unless, Lana does work for Lex but has an agenda … maybe her end game is to destroy Lex and his empire from within?! Then again, if it is the case, Lex would know by now that Lana is not on his side since he surely saw her convo with Tess….

So who is Lana working with? It’s clear she has a partner or someone she answers to. Who was she talking with while looking at the files she took from Tess? Could it be someone we know? Oliver maybe? After all, Lana seems to have a few cool gadgets to do her ‘job’ and Oliver has a lot of gadgets and loads of money… and Oliver’s main goal is to destroy Lex and the Luthor Empire. If not Oliver, with whom is Lana working? And what is her ultimate end game? Have a theory? Share it with us in comments below.

Lionel Luthor.

That’s about the only person who would be cool. Anyone else… I don’t know. Since Oliver is working with Martian Manhunter already I don’t think it’s him and on the other hand Lana didn’t know about the Legion so they can’t be the other end of the conversation either.

I mean it could be somebody from the future but how such a story can go horrible wrong we saw on “Enterprise”.

It could be somebody new but for that I think we need a renewal for another season for him/her to really be cool…

How long was she gone again? About seven months? Anytime that happens in TV land it means the girl was pregnant.

I’m not sure if the history from the comics would support such a plot turn, but I would be interested in seeing it.

I started hating Lana Lang in season 3. well, ahtes a strong word. I need a very strong word here. How’s loathe? Abhor? Detest? What’s with this show bringing her back and what’s with all the “Ooh Lana, you’re destiny is so awesome and improtant to the world” crap in “Legion”? I really like season 8, but Lana’s absence was one of the reasons I liked it. Now, I dunno.

Actually I think Imra said she was well known outside of her relationship with Clark. Didn’t say whether it was as a force for good or evil (or indeed, a force of any kind whatsoever). Not that her destiny was awesome and important…
