30 Rock – Jack sends Frank back to the writer’s room

30 RockOh man, this was a brilliant episode. I thought it was one of the better installments of the season, if not the best episode yet. How can you not love an episode based on Harry and the Hendersons? Especially when it includes an awesome cameo from John Lithgow? What a good sport. Between looking for the Sci Fi Channel, poking fun at the fact that he was in Harry and the Hendersons, and then yelling “I’m a celebrity” as Jack slams the door in his face, he really milked that cameo for all it was worth.

That was only a small portion of the episode, though.

I really love how this show can be so smart and so simple at the same time. You don’t have to be a genius to enjoy the simple pleasure of Tracy making cheese friends, or Jenna faking the death of a vocal coach to get attention. 30 Rock does sprinkle each show with some really subtle jokes at the same time. This week, it was John Lithgow assuming that Liz had been watching The World According to Garp when the mere sight of him forced her to do the right thing.

I think the moment of the episode came at the end when Jack forced Frank out of law school and back into the writer’s room. It was a brilliant mirroring of the climactic scene of Harry and the Hendersons, right down to Jack hitting Frank in the face. The sight of Frank slinking away, his shoulders slumped, looking back at Jack with sadness and confusion. Oh man, I loved it. I was giggling throughout.

Am I alone here? This was the best episode of the year, right?

I really thought this episode wasn’t all that great. It was still better than 99% of everything else out there, but not as funny as most of the other episodes this season.

I agree. I thought it was all too bizarre last night, although the Harry and the Hendersons part was the funniest stuff by far. Jenna = not funny.
