Dark Blue – Never load your gun with company ammo

dylan_mcdermott_darkblue pilotThis one is totally on Jaimie (Nicki Aycox); I think Dean (Logan Marshall-Green) actually likes her, and that he was nothing more than something to amuse her while she was on a break with boyfriend, Scott (Noah Bean). Now, I don’t see their attraction, or the evolution of their relationship in any way, shape, or form, but if anyone’s getting hurt here, it’s stone-cold Dean. Just don’t become a stalker.

In his other relationship, with partner Ty (Omari Hardwick), I’m wondering if Dean is jealous of what Ty has at home, or if he’s mad at him for leaving their boy’s club. We never got to see it, but I’m assuming that Ty was once more like Dean, and that they use to spend a lot of time making hay. Now, having a wife to come home to has made Ty a bit of a nervous Nellie, and it does not play well out in the field.

Nor does Dean’s recklessness go over so well. I think he seriously needs to temper his wild ways, but that’s up to Carter (Dylan McDermott) to reign him in, something he doesn’t seem to ever do much of. In fact, it’s Ty who gets the short shrift from Carter, although I think that has a lot to do with how much his thinking has been affected by his new concern for life and limb.

Ty seems to be losing favor in his little crew, more so even with Carter than with Dean, who still sees him as a brother. Carter just wants black and white results, and if Ty can’t deliver…. Is that the real reason behind Carter’s recruitment of Jaimie? Is she to be Dean’s new partner, with Ty riding shotgun in Carter’s car?

Something that I’m guessing has always been true is that Dean sees the big picture, while Ty is a small screen guy. How he could even question going after President Lee, instead of just being satisfied with the heroin dealer, is beyond me. Isn’t it always about the big fish?

I was a little sad that Dean kept on popping up with a new source for the three-hundred thousand that they needed to buy the counterfeit half mil; I really liked how they “fundraised” in the past, and I imagined it would be a major part of the series. This crew certainly doesn’t seem to spend too much time thinking about the legal ramifications of their actions (breaking and entering, illegal surveillance, etc.). Why not rip-off another stash house?

Detail one about Carter came out: he was once happily married. And … that’s it so far. Slow reveal for the man at the helm. That’s about as much as I know (or have figured … I can’t remember) about McDermott’s character on The Practice, as well, through ten episodes. So maybe it’s the actor who’s inscrutable. Who knows?

I, for one, am very excited to hang around and find out. Go team Dark Blue!
