(Season 2, Episodes 17-20)
House, MD, at least the second season, is coming in for a landing. We’re starting to see some characters evolve, for the worse, and, I guess, the worser. I like Omar Epps, I really do, but I really don’t like where the character of Foreman is going (though, to be honest, I still like him more than I hate the “blah” that is Chase). It’ll be interesting to see how things end themselves in the next four episodes.
“All In”
I really like the idea that House has had a case that continues to haunt him. The best parts of House are his flaws, and one like that gets inside of you where you live. Wilson’s allusion to Moby Dick was very appropriate. House has always gone after his cases with reckless abandon, and maybe this is one of the reasons why.
He was right, but I don’t think he wanted to be. I’m not saying he wanted the kid to die, because House obviously cared. But it drives him and controls him, and living with that type of burden is hard. Harder still, however, then living without it.
“Sleeping Dogs Lie”
The way the teaser was shot was intense. And freaky. And a patient that stays awake despite downing a bottle of sleeping pills is just as freaky.
I adore Jayma Mays. She’s definitely one of those actresses that I usually mention each week that I wish was getting more work. But, I remembered that I have Glee, and so does she. Mays did an outstanding job playing someone on death’s door. It’s actually a hallmark of this show that I haven’t mentioned much. Mays stands out.
And also completes a Studio 60 connection in the episode, as she played Harriet Hayes’ publicist in the pilot, and Julia Ling, the daughter seeking birth control, had an extended arc as Kim Tao.
Foreman sure busted out the asshole card, to a frankly surprising degree. Deliberately undercutting one’s teammates — never mind the friend he claims not to be — is just plain not cool. I had no idea, however, that this would be tame compared to how bad he’d get in this run of episodes.
“House vs. God”
Had I completely missed the fact that Chase had been in seminary, or did I just completely miss the joke?
From a boy who speaks to God, to a boy character destined to save the human race, Thomas Dekker has had some interesting roles (seriously, if you haven’t caught the Jesus Christ/John Connor connection before, you’re missing out). Boyd was certainly an odd duck, but I think Dekker gets more roles than he deserves (a reversal from my normal whining).
Wilson slept with a patient? Holy crap, I didn’t see that coming at all. Morals and ethics are often discussed on this show, but it’s usually Wilson having the high ground, and not House. You can talk about Wilson being a “fixer” as much as you want (I, for what its worth, would rather see him and Cameron together, than the eventual Chase pairing I know I’ll be stuck with), but this is just out of character.
“Euphoria – Part One”
Three really good episodes, and this is the two-parter? Nothing about this case, or the characters, was as interesting as the anything in this group of episodes. Putting Foreman in danger ramps things up a bit, but it’s obvious he was never in any danger (nor would it have been if I’d watched when originally aired, because it wasn’t the right kind of risk to be real).
Foreman continues to walk right past the point of being a human being. Stealing work product is one thing, but sticking Cameron was assault, and tantamount to attempted murder. What the hell was going through his head? Granted he’d been going through a lot with the whole locked away with a dude that’s dying, but he’s just plain damn wrong here.
