Dark Blue season one finale – Will it be back for season two?

dark blue 1.10 finale

Don’t get me wrong — questions aplenty remain. But the finale provided us with more insight on Carter than we’ve ever had before.

The flip side is that the entire story was fairly predictable. My wife called the wrap-up mid-episode … I suppose we can’t have it all.

It was also somewhat disappointing that this was no long-haul of a case … I assumed that a season finale was the perfect place for a multi-part story. However, Dark Blue is still not renewed for a second season, so the writers were handcuffed into scripting something with an end to it. How could this fantastic show still be on the fence?

Dark Blue is such a sleeper that TNT is even doing a poor job promoting it. The show’s site is short on pictures and details, and heavy on incorrect information. Where’s the network support?

Anyway, to the episode: Carter is questioned in the murder of an undercover DEA agent that he had a prior relationship with. And current … the agent was engaged to Carter’s ex wife, Nicole. Or, we should say estranged wife, as Carter has yet to give her signed divorce papers, eighteen months on. Why’d they split? Carter’s take: “We had issues.”

Those issues appear to have at least partially stemmed from Carter’s two years undercover in East LA, living as Leo Clark, with a woman named Anna and her two small children. No one’s ever said that Carter doesn’t go all the way, but some things a marriage will not absorb.

I was a bit surprised that the team seemed to know Carter’s superior, Captain Maynard (Tyrees Allen). I’m not sure why, but I always got the impression that the wall was so high, they had no idea who he was, just that he existed. Although, if Dean processed that his title is “Captain,” he sure didn’t act like it.

Carter and team were questioned by DEA Agent Harris, a desk jockey assigned to wade head-first into the workings of undercover LAPD officers. The obvious disdain on both sides could have been avoided if the two law enforcement agencies had foreseen what television has taught us all: without a common frame-of-reference, the investigation was doomed from the start.

Ty shocked me when he appeared to bail on Carter. I’m not saying be comfortable with covering up the murder of a federal agent, but Ty went as far as to question what he owed Carter. That, coupled with his arc thus far, left me assuming that he’d go for the Major Crimes transfer.

Actually, I also thought that Carter would be suspended pending a full investigation, and that Jaimie, after sort of coming clean to Scott (Noah Bean), would be off with him to San Francisco, leaving Dean, in the final scene, trying to run solo undercover investigations.

You know, a full team split, ala the Leverage season one finale. And, particularly if the show isn’t coming back, it would have given us a reason for the non-return: no team to follow. Not to mention, if it does return, great drama as Carter tries to reassemble his people.

What the entire team returning to headquarters in the end did do was make a statement from the show — to TNT — that there’s still more to be done. So, how about it?

Actually, the word out now is that Dark Blue has been renewed for a 2nd season. For some reason, not many people know about it and TNT has yet to release an official press release, but it has been renewed!

This was one of the best new shows on TV!

Really? Where are you hearing it from?

who plays carters exwife

Still trying to figure that out. I saw a rough cut, so there were no credits, and IMDb and tv.com haven’t updated yet. I’ll keep an eye out for you.

I’m another one really hoping for a 2nd season. This and Castle are the only two “procedurals” I genuinely love. (Psych doesn’t count, does it?) If it isn’t renewed I’ll be very disappointed. Anyone know how its ratings are?

It’s averaging a tad over 2 million, although the finale was down to 1.6 million. As I said somewhere before, Saving Grace had better numbers, but was retaining a lower percentage of its lead-in (The Closer) audience than Dark Blue, as Leverage does worse numbers than The Closer does. There must be an argument to be made for keeping people glued to their seats, even if it is less in totality, no?

I am hooked on Dark Blue. This is the only series that I watch regularly. I will be checking out the reruns now on Wednesday night. Dark Blue needs to be renewed.

Season Finale was GREAT!!!! Dark Blue needs to come back.

who was the actress who played the DEA agent investigating the shooting death in which carter is a suspect? (season finale)

September 26, 2009 at 8:09 PM

Agent Julia Harris was played by Sasha Aexander (as a blonde). She is best known as Kate Todd on NCIS in season 1 and 2. The NCIS character, Special Agent Kate Todd was killed in the season 2 finale of NCIS. IMHO, she would be an great addition for Dark Blue if the show is renewed. We’ll keep our fingers crossed.

I’m not sure; something about how cliched it was for her, the desk-bound investigator, to be questioning the seasoned field operative actually surprised me. Now, had she been a grizzled former field op who knew how the game was played….

Just a thought… I understand the rule is that when you go undercover, you’re not to discuss/admit the undercover assignment… so, with that in mind… Agent Julia Harris might have gone under in her past, but can’t discuss/admit now. We really don’t know anything more that what was briefly discussed about her in this one episode. Heck, we only got some of Carter’s background info in the finale episode. If Agent Julia Harris joins Dark Blue on a more permanent basis, no telling what we might find out about her character… That’s all I’m saying. :)

September 26, 2009 at 10:05 PM

Fair enough. :-) You may very well be correct.

September 27, 2009 at 3:16 PM

First of all, we have to get DB renewed for season 2! Let’s keep the good thoughts going!

September 27, 2009 at 6:48 PM

I liked the Agent Harris role and actress also. And I had thoughts of how she could become a permanent character?? Yes, we need a season 2. I think that the show could have had better numbers if it didn’t follow Leverage, or had had more promotion. Following the Closer will be Great!

September 28, 2009 at 10:15 AM

Thank God they renewed it. I couldn’t believe they wouldn’t. I love this show. I was thinking, not another great show down the drain. TNT did the same with Saving Grace and expected viewers. If you don’t promote it, you don’t get viewers. A no brainer. The shows they heavily promote, I don’t give a rats ear about. No offense to those who love The Closer and Leverage. There’s something for everybody. Those just aren’t for me.

Thanks for renewing Dark Blue.

September 28, 2009 at 6:56 PM

Where di you hear that it is remewed?? I Hope so! Thanks

September 28, 2009 at 6:58 PM

Wow..I got so excited..I mistyped! I hope that you are right about being renewed.

September 29, 2009 at 6:26 PM

Do we have a source on this yet?

September 28, 2009 at 1:40 PM

Did anyone find out if Dark Blue is coming back??
We want more Dark Blue!!!!!

October 1, 2009 at 2:25 PM

There was a Dark Blue press conference with Dyla McDermott on 9/29/09 in West LA, but I’ve only found references to the press conference on Wire Image (photo only site). So, there was no detail for what the press conference was about. Call me Norman, but I think positive and I’m hoping that this is a good sign announcing that there will be a season 2. If anyone else finds details on the press conference, please share!

October 1, 2009 at 2:50 PM

Interesting … thanks for the info! I’m seeing if there’s anything to be found out. But, can we call you Norman regardless?

October 6, 2009 at 12:46 AM

:) Yes, you can call me Norman regardless!

October 6, 2009 at 3:32 PM

Finally … Norman was one of the last names on the list of people with names I’d like to meet. Thanks, Norman! :)
