The Vampire Diaries shows a darker side, and I like it

I really had a good time last week making fun of The Vampire Diaries. The foolishness of the show was just screaming at me from inside my TV, willing me to point it out for all the world to see.

This week, I was pleasantly surprised with the third episode of The Vampire Diaries. There was a decidedly darker side to the show and I felt the fear. It didn’t feel safe and “high school” to me anymore. The death is getting closer to the main characters, Elena let Damon in and now anything — anything — can happen. I like it.

Gone is the corniness of the Doogie Howser diary entries (OK, it’s there a little but it was more tolerable) and in its place is a creepiness reminiscent of The Master’s midnight visits to Buffy while she slept, and Angelus’s murdering sprees and overall bloodlust. I can see why Julie Plec said this is one of her favorite episodes.

Yes, the Stefan and Damon scenes are still a bit tired, but at least more has been revealed about why they are at odds and how Elena mirrors Katherine.

Bonnie is being used better and I can see her powers becoming more important as the series continues. What are the numbers: 8 14 22? Stefan’s birthdate? The date Katherine died? Book readers, you keep your spoilers to yourself; those were rhetorical, musing questions!

Damon’s evilness is divine, and I love knowing why he is so damaged. Dude, he ate the coach (who was an ass and kind of deserved it, but still)! Play those mind games with Elena, keep her on edge and make her think she’s losing it. Come between her and Stefan and exact your revenge, ’cause that’s good TV.

How are you all feeling about the second episode of The Vampire Diaries? I’m still on board and I’m hoping for a fun ride.

I really hate Damon. Not in the love to hate him kind of way – just in the I will happily await the series end if it means he suffers horribly. The BF and I are loving it. Cheesy, but actually pretty well done. Like it far, far better than I did Twilight with the mousy whiner bitch. :-)

Oh, me too. Hate everything about Twilight (and not in that love to hate sort of way! ;-)). Elena is definitely not as weak a character as Bella and Stefan not quite so syrupy and condescending.

Damnit, I turned this episode off in the middle because I thought it was so bad. Now I’m going to have to finish watching it. :(

The coach is also the history teacher that yelled at Elena’s aunt.

We are still waiting for this to premiere in Australia but I think it starts tonight on Ch 99 and I’m intrigued after some of your comments…
