Bones is all about the dynamics

I talk about characters all the time. A good character, or more specifically, a good group of characters, is the backbone of any good show. The next step in that process, however, are the dynamics that are developed via back story and the interactions that occur between the characters during the course of the plot. This week’s quasi-investigation into the assassination of President John Kennedy shows very distinctly the well-written dynamics between all of the characters.

Bones and Booth
At this point, it kind of goes without saying how awesome these two are. So much subtext it’s become actual, you know, text (Which is how they used to describe Josh and Donna). Booth said it best, “You only kept looking because of me.”

Angela and Hodgins
As much as every fan on the planet seems to want these two back together, they have better chemistry apart. It was apparent when they were getting together, and it’s apparent now that they are apart.

Booth and Hodgins
One of my favorite secondary relationships on the show, these two have an unspoken respect for each other, even though it doesn’t always show. To say these two have an almost brotherly relationship would diminish Hodgins’ relationship with the oft-missed Zack, but he and Booth really have got the antagonism/respect thing down.

Cam and the Squints
No one liked her at first, either on the show, or seeming quite a few of the fans. About the same time she ingratiated herself with the fans, it also occurred with the team. She stands up for them at every turn, but reprimands them when necessary. She’s definitely the mother hen. “Mr. White, for future reference you might want to inform your bosses we don’t do half truth here.”

Sweets and, well, everyone
As professionally qualified as Sweets is, he just wants to be accepted. Not just by Booth, who both represents the ideal male and lead of the show, but by Cam and by Angela and by Hodgins. He can’t catch a break, no matter how many times he proves himself.

Like I said, good characters can’t live in a vacuum. Bones has found a way to make all of its characters feel like a family without beating that dynamic against our head. When you can put aside who you are for the sake of how you feel about another like Bones did for Booth, well, that’s love.

Other thoughts:

• So, Bones digs some Cindi Lauper, but not Michael Jackson?
• How can you not love Richard T. Jones … He did a great job as a freaky GSA “official”
• I had almost forgotten about Diedrich Bader’s recurring role
• “No, this is America, baby, we can conjecture all we want.”
• As much as I may not love Angela and Wendell, I do love how it’s affecting her dynamic with Hodgins … It’s sad, yes, but it is interesting.
• Cam explaining Booth’s psychology to Sweets was a bit off, right?
