Damages – The Tobins get into it deeper

Season three of 'Damages' continues with the Tobin clan getting even deeper into trouble.

- Season 3, Episode 5 - "It's Not My Birthday"

This season of Damages is certainly taking a different tone than the first two seasons. In both of those installments, there was a distinct and dynamic villain. In this season, it appears that there is no central figure. Louis certainly isn’t going to be the main focus of the season, and his family seems to have mixed motivations. I don’t get the sense that any of them are the sociopaths that Frobisher and Walter Kendrick proved themselves to be. I just can’t imagine that we are going to see Joe doing lines of coke off a hooker’s naked body any time soon this year. Perhaps time will prove me wrong.

In any case, the Tobins are not all good. We’ve already seen that Joe is a bit of a loose cannon, particularly when he is drinking. Although he has yet to kill, he has shown that he is willing to do what it takes to protect himself and his family. He was perfectly willing to get Danielle out of the country, even with a severe brain injury, knowing full well that it would kill her. She was spared once, but in this episode it was Joe’s sister, Carol, who finished the job. She wasn’t necessarily trying to protect anyone, she was merely acting out of spite and grief, killing Danielle for crimes against the Tobins.

These certainly aren’t good people, and it’s going to be interesting to see just how far they can sink before all is said and done. I’m certainly looking forward to seeing it. What is the fallout of Carol’s actions going to be? Will Joe or Lenny have to take action to protect her? I have a feeling that they are just going to continue to sink deeper and deeper into trouble.

There wasn’t much revealed in the flashforwards this week, though it certainly seems like Tom died in a pretty gruesome manner. Someone really wanted him dead. I’m beginning to wonder if Patty’s hit really did end up happening, or if someone else had it out for Tom. He certainly wasn’t ingratiating himself with the Tobins this week, and I wouldn’t be surprised if one of those family members end up being responsible for his death.

What are your thoughts on the season so far?
