Modern Family’s Cam and Phil get their moment in the starlight

Modern Family's 'Starry Night' gave its ensemble cast a chance to shine ... and the viewing audience a chance to laugh.

- Season 1, Episode 18 - "Starry Night"

“It’s not your fault, Honey. ‘Mother’ is part of the word. You never hear of anyone being ‘sfathered’ to death.” – Phil, to Claire after he hints that she smothers the kids

It’s a lot of episodes in a row that I’ve gushed about how hilarious Modern Family is. I’ll just warn you ahead of time … I won’t be doing anything different tonight. What I do like is that someone different steals the show each week, and tonight it was Cam and Phil that did it for me.

You wanted to believe that Phil’s hands-off approach to Luke’s project was going to be a complete failure, didn’t you? Why wouldn’t you, when they were clearly making the point that Phil was as ADHD as Luke seems to be. Now we know it’s just genetics; you don’t find peaches under apple trees and probably neither of them has ADHD. Although you have to wonder what label they could slap on Luke, thinking that no one can hear him when he’s wearing headphones. It reminds me of when my son was an infant and was sure he could hide from us by covering his eyes.

Cameron’s racial faux pas will never get old. They’ve milked the Asian pediatrician, so now he may as well stick his foot in the Colombian’s mouth. The Columbia / Brown mix-up at the party was priceless, and it’s just like to Cam to try make up for it by eating the sun.

I’m so glad that the writers use every cast member’s strengths and that it truly is an ensemble show. Oftentimes, one or two actors or characters will stand out in an ensemble, but in Modern Family, they really all get their chance to shine.

Luke’s interpretation of Starry Night was awesome

I’m still enjoying the show, but I’m getting really frustrated at ABC for continually revealing the funniest moments of the show in previews. Am I the only one? It seems a lot worse than with other shows….
