Burn Notice – The good, the bad and the flirty

As the case of the week brings the three main characters back together, we get some forward movement on the Kendra arc.

- Season 4, Episode 5 - "Neighborhood Watch"

“Sometimes people need to fight their own battles. Still, it’s better to have Michael Westen than a 2×4.” – Madeline

Burn Notice was fun tonight, wasn’t it? A lot of the things that annoyed me about last week’s episode were resolved this week and there’s a lot I liked about the case of the week. Or, more specifically, what the case of the week provided for our beloved three characters.

The Good

  • They finally got Kendra. The cat-and-mouse, though only for this one episode, was going to get old fast and I’m glad we saw forward motion … and the next episode should be great.
  • Jesse put a tracer on money underneath a smiley face sticker.
  • Sugar! I love it when they bring back old characters on this show.
  • Sam in a bar fight, Sam as a rent-a-cop, Sam calling the airplane kid a “smug little brat,” Sam….
  • Less Jesse and more of The Three satisfied my need for the old chemistry. The writers were smart to step back a bit on th new dynamics this week.
  • Fiona got to play with lots of guns and explosives. The joy in her face is infectious.
  • The writers got the subtitles under control in this episode.
  • I really don’t care, but hey, that was Aceveda from The Shield. Can I get a “whoo-hoo”? Keith, consider my shout-out shouted out.

The Bad

  • Michael Westen saying “hit me on the hip,” even when undercover, was more than a little disturbing.
  • Holy Hyundai, Batman! I’m not sure how I feel about the blatant product placement (though it was clever and amusing that they “disguised” it within a voice over), but now I know that Hyundai’s got over 300 horsepower and rear wheel drive.

The Flirty

Fiona jealous of Michael bantering with Kendra — really? Admittedly, it made for some fun scenes (and quotes), but people, you saw Fiona with Jesse last week. She practically exchanged bodily fluids with him. If I’m being honest, it didn’t really bother me, and we got this exchange:

“Someone’s getting a little too flirty for his own good.” – Fiona
“Fi, I’m trying to snatch Kendra off the street and tie her to a chair.” – Michael
“You are not helping your cause.” – Fiona

I’m really enjoying season four of Burn Notice. Ask me again in a couple of weeks when Psych, White Collar, Warehouse 13 and other fun shows start up again….

I think they are running out of ideas. The season plot is OK, but the episode was blah.

This is my favorite show of all time but at some point they hit the wall.

I also hate Jesse. As mentioned above, the main characters have always had great chemistry and he sure doesn’t add anything (unless he really is a villain).
