Vampire Diaries fills in some blanks

Wow, I felt like I was watching a 'Vampire Diaries' spin-off episode tonight, they introduced so many new characters. They all seem to be central to the next big story arc, though.

- Season 2, Episode 9 - "Katerina"

“I was looking out for myself, Elena. I will always look out for myself. If you’re smart, you’ll do the same.” – Katherine

Some historical questions were answered: we know what Trevor did to piss off Klaus and we saw the moment Katherine’s evil selfishness began, when she used Trevor and Rose and ruined the next 500 years for them. We know a lot of Katherine’s behavior is coming from a place of hurt, but it’s not making me feel a whole lot of sympathy for her. Talk to me when she stops looking out for number one and puts someone else first.

What we don’t yet know, and I’m intrigued, is exactly who Luka’s dad is (a big scary witch, I get that part). Why was he with Elijah? Is he the witch that’s been lined up to break the curse? Does Luka know? I’m a little worried here, because Bonnie’s so in need of a … ahem, little intimacy, that she’s going to be distracted by Luka which is probably exactly the place he and Daddy want her to be.

I’m going to do a little musing now. If the group that Katherine wanted to use to break the curse is Elena, Tyler, Caroline and Bonnie, who’s Klaus’s group, besides Elijah and Dr. Martin? I’m thinking Tyler may just be the ace in the hole here, because if everyone believes werewolves to be extinct, Klaus could be one-upped this time around, even if Rose and Damon are stupid enough to get the moonstone.

One last thing — I loved watching Nina Dobrev chat with herself. She did an amazing job of playing Katherine and Elena conversing and I didn’t once feel like I was watching the same person play two roles — very convincing. She was able to convey Katherine’s selfish survival instinct at the same time Elena’s desperation came across.

This and that:

  • Are we supposed to have any more insight into why Elena is the doppelganger? Just because they needed a human, not a vampire? Still not clear on why she’s a ringer for Katherine or how she was “created.”
  • Saw Damon and Rose coming a mile away … Damon needed a good roll in the hay to get his mind off of Elena. Though he could have shagged Bonnie and killed two birds with one stone….
  • Does it bug anyone else when Damon opens his eyes really wide? Is it a weird tick or annoying overacting?
  • Poor Jeremy … he may be the single most unlucky at love character in the history of television.
  • Elijah is so powerful he can compel other vampires … yeah, that’s cool.
  • Throwing the coins through the UV plate glass was delightfully, evilly clever. I’m digging Elijah.

Tonight was definitely awesome. And, ditto, this ep, Nina D. did a kickass job with Katherine. But each week they introduce characters that I love and they immediately kill off i.e. scholar vampire.

Am I the only one digging Caroline this season? If she becomes Lexie 2.0, I’m fine with it. While I love Bonnie, I find her taste in men doubtful. Luka doesn’t really do it for me. Luka’s dad? Yes. Jeremy (who I hope is legal)? Yes. Luka (who’s probably a werewolf)? mm, not so much.

Agree … and the parents on this show clearly all had their children when they were 15 years old.

I’m going to make a bold prediction. I think Elijah is a vampire whose a werewolf. He probably has a solution to walking in the sun already so probably wants to hijack the moonstone to undo the wolf curse. That might be why he has the abilities to not die when staked by a wooden staff/ lamppost and eye-controlling other vampires.

The only hole in my theory is that if being a wolf makes him immune to staking, wouldn’t a vampire make him immune to turning.

Either way, we’ll probably find his deal in the first 10 minutes of the next episode, given the pace of this show.

That’s an awesome theory and would make it a real battle, without putting Tyler in such a prominent role. What fun!

Elijah heard them talking outside the shop before he threw the coins (yes, very cool), so werewolf out of the bag, but he doesnt know who it is. Me thinks he will be able to find out!

Interesting theory- Elijah being both – not sure if I see the show doing that – but interseting.

Um – ICKY – with the hook up with Damon and giant woman. Awkward. I have to say I have been dying to see him “interact” with another chic on the show, because, well, we want to see that. I was just commenting the other day it had been a while since he has had his shirt off, but they are just not a good match. He had to practialy tackle her to kiss her. Didnt work for me. What a shame.

Bonnie. She is lame. Kill her off and bring in a cooler witch please.

Nina, again great job with the two parts, but she missed the crying session in acting school. Never can seem upset without seeming fake. Take a lesson from your co-star Paul.

And lastly, this show needs one of the books I publish on good techniques for SOUND! I cant freakin hear anyone half the time.

Totally agree with Christine – Bonnie is lame. She can’t do anything without bleeding and passing out. Wuss.

Also… is anyone else getting a little tired of Elena these days? I mean when did she become all woe-is-me whiny? The way she has been acting the past few episodes is getting on my nerves. Quit complaining and deal with it – or at least put some sort of effort forth.

I don’t know, just my thoughts…
