The Closer – Retainer

Brenda tries to find a lawyer and comes to the shocking realization that they're expensive. She really does live in her own little Brenda Leigh world, doesn't she?

- Season 7, Episode 6 - "Home Improvement"

Yet another week without the cold exasperation of Captain Raydor. I don’t know about you guys, but I kind of miss her. Without Raydor, Brenda just spins around willy-nilly, grilling Gabriel about her missing tennis shoes and canceling all of Fritz’s ESPNs.

Having Brenda on the other side of the law, if only in a civil matter, is interesting because it seems that at least to some extent, she’s actually putting herself in the shoes of the people she brings into the station. Brenda and her team are constantly bringing in people whom they know probably have nothing to do with the murder in hand, but have information. They grill them and often make them feel the need to get a lawyer which is definitely going to hurt them financially and may or may not give Brenda any actual information.

However, Brenda is clearly an “ends justify the means” type of gal, so I can’t imagine that any insights she’s having that are related to the case against her are going to actually lead to any lasting change. If anything, going with Raydor to see the Turell’s murder scene would have done that, but since she’s still proclaiming to be “100% innocent,” it doesn’t seem to have stuck.

I feel as though the procedural nature of The Closer has kind of been suffering lately. This is kind of a good thing because it means that the over-arching storylines are more interesting, but at the same time, the cases of the week have been kind of boring. I don’t think I’ve really been invested in any of them this season, and this week’s was no exception. Of course the murder has to do with real estate: the real estate market, especially in California, is in the shitter. Everything about this just kind of seemed like filler to get to the more important issues surrounding Brenda.

Speaking of which, am I the only one that’s kind of confounded by Pope’s weight loss storyline? When he asked why she hadn’t told him that he was fat, I thought it was a one-off comment. But then it became a part of just about every episode and I can’t for the life of me figure out why. Does J.K. Simmons have some weird weight loss drama going on offscreen that they had to write into this season? Because otherwise, the point is completely lost on me.
