It’s no secret I’m a huge Buffy the Vampire Slayer fan. So when you’re combining any part of Buffy with another show I love, Supernatural, I’m so sold. However, with the episode behind us, I have to say I’m a bit saddened that we got not even a smidgen of a nod to Buffy with both James Marsters and Charisma Carpenter on the show. I can only imagine that someone high on the food chain at the studio just really wanted nothing to do with putting Buffy in there at all. Or maybe it was one of the actors? Please, say it isn’t so.
There are a couple of main things I wanted to bring up regarding this episode. One is Marsters’ Donald Stark. Is there any role Marsters has played that he doesn’t simply own? Well, playing Stark was no exception, and I’m loving the fact that he left the Winchesters on rather good terms. Supernatural‘s certainly been known to bring back popular characters time and again, so could this mean we’ll see the immortal Mr. Stark make an appearance again? Deb went so far as to utter, “Is Stark the new Castiel?” Well … that would certainly be cool to have him around, helping the boys with those powers, but as a Castiel “replacement?” Not sure I’d go that far.
The other point to mention is the continuing guilt Dean has for killing Sam’s friend-turned-monster a couple episodes ago. Once again Dean is haunted by the guilt of what he’d done, and once again Sam offers Dean to pour it all out to him. Well, I’m already getting tired of it. Of all the things Dean and Sam have done in their lives, I’m just not buying that Dean should feel that badly about it, much less that Sam would hold an eternal grudge if he found out. I just hope that the payoff makes sense and is worthwhile, because I’m about ready to see it finished.
One last thing: Will they throw the leviathan down a bottomless pit? Wait … there are bottomless pits?!

All the boxes in the packed-up house had A1 labels on them- I immediately thought Angel Investigations. So I think that was definitely a shout out.
Enjoyed your write up. Gotta say, I’m not sure the Leviathan story is headed in a strong direction. I wish the show had a bigger budget enabling them to present monsters that weren’t always in human form; this hit-man low level Leviathan never struck me as a credible threat to the bros. Maybe he wasn’t supposed to be, cause he never really registered on their radar, or maybe it’s something else entirely- like the bottomless pit you pointed out- rising up to take over… Yeah. Probably not. However, I shall keep mum and trust in the writers, they have gifted me with many a golden egg after all.
So maybe Don Stark wouldn’t be the new Castiel, but when he saved the Winchester boys, it made me think of how they really have come to rely on a supernatural being to survive. Don would maybe be more like The Trickster when he was around, who sometimes saved them, sometimes played with them. I can see this happening.
