TV on DVD – Family Guy, Switched At Birth, and Sledge Hammer!

A short list of releases includes 'Sledge Hammer!', 'Family Guy', 'Switched At Birth', 'Gunsmoke', 'Wyatt Earp', 'State Trooper', 'Life and Times of Tim', 'Swamp People, and 'Spin City'.

That’s right. Sledge Hammer! With an exclamation point! Technically, I have to put it there because it is part of the show title. But really, I’d do it even if it wasn’t, because Sledge Hammer! is awesome. It also has a very interesting history. From originally being created by a 16 year old Alan Spencer, to a brief stop at HBO that might have had Rodney Dangerfield or Joe Piscopo in the lead role. In case you missed it the first time around, Inspector Sledge Hammer (David Rasche) is a bizarro-world Dirty Harry. And every time you think he can’t get more ridiculous, he does. The show only managed two seasons in the late ’80s, struggling while facing off against Dallas and Miami Vice, but they were two great seasons, and they are both available for a nice deal at Amazon. It is my pick of the week.

Sledge Hammer! is so outstanding that I’m tempted to violate my Blu-ray-only policy for it. Is there any chance of an HD version in the far future? I know it’s more likely for older series shot on film (ST:TOS) than newer ones shot on video (ST:TNG).

BTW, Brett, I finally got a chance to watch the Garai/Miller Emma earlier this year and found it sublime. Thanks for the recommendation.

I would hesitate to say never, because anything really could happen in the far future, but I’d be surprised if we see a Blu-ray Sledge Hammer! set. For now, I’ll just be happy that we have the DVD version, and hope that this puts us one step closer to getting that Beggars & Choosers complete series.

Glad you enjoyed Emma!
