My almost-4-year-old loves Halloween. Every day is Halloween for him, really, as he is dressed as anything from a superhero to a knight to a firefighter. Yep, we’re That Family, the one you see in the supermarkets, kid sporting a mask and a cape.
Since Owen loves all things Halloween, you can imagine my dilemma this time of year, when looking for appropriate kid programming centered around this made-up holiday. Here are a few that have made the cut in our house:
Franklin: Halloween — From the characters choosing their costumes to a haunted house, it’s got all of the elements to satisfy a preschooler’s Halloween fantasies. And there’s always some holier-than-thou message to Franklin, like sharing keeps you out of jail, and you shouldn’t scare your sister or you’ll go to Hell, that sort of thing.
Dora the Explorer: Boo — When Dora has to help a little monster find his way home on Halloween, adventure ensues. Designed for kids to actively participate, it would be fun to see what percentage of kids actually talk back to Dora, and when their lobotomies are scheduled.
Mickey’s Clubhouse: Mickey’s Treat — The gang is on their way to Pete’s Halloween party. It’s foggy and there is a full moon; thank goodness for the “mouseketools.” If you, as a parent, can handle the pure innocence of this show without vomiting, it’s a nice way to stimulate your kid’s problem-solving skills, too.
Max and Ruby: Max’s Halloween — Is a vampire costume too scary? Should Max be a Little Prince for Halloween instead? I’ve got no snark. It’s a nice, if not somewhat worthless, little show.
These are all On Demand for us this year, and Owen would love even more Halloween-themed shows. Anyone have any favorites their kids love?

My son is turning 18 in a month but he loved Thomas the Tank Engine back in the day. George Carlin was the best Mr. Conductor and there were a couple of episodes that were Halloween based.
When I was a kid all we had for Halloween entertainment was the annual airing of It’s the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown and The Ghost and Mr. Chicken.
