Eleventh Hour – Will it make the cut?

eleventh_hour_sewell_sheltonIn a word, yes. I believe it will. I hope.

I know; where’s the suspense in that? Well, I think this television season has given us all enough to be tense about without forcing you to wonder what conclusion I’m inevitably going to draw. You can thank me later for postponing your TV-anxiety-induced heart attack.

I recently wrote about the questionable science that swirls around shows like Eleventh Hour. And, while that may be true, it doesn’t mean that the show isn’t scripted fare at its finest. Only that a couple of lab rats might get ticked off every now and then (I love you, dear!). The rest of us tune in to be entertained, and boy does this show succeed! With its first season over, and the death-watch beginning, let us count the ways:

  1. I love how Rufus Sewell (Jacob Hood) speaks. There’s a very breathy and mysterious tone to his voice that, to me, lends a sense of calm and control. When mercury poison is afoot, or second hearts are agrowing, it’s nice to know that someone is on top of things.
  2. Rachel Young (Marley Shelton) is believable as an FBI agent. It seems like a pretty simple thing, but too many shows are using actors who aren’t believable in their roles, and I appreciate when one is cast correctly.
  3. The show is always fresh. New crises all across the country may appear impossible for one scientist to handle, but the changing scenery and the new topic make for a bit of a surprise each and every time.
  4. Omar Benson Miller (Felix Lee) is awesome. I was a bit disappointed when he was first added, because to me it was an indication that the producers were scrambling to give the show a boost before it got canceled. But Miller is amazing; I’ve enjoyed him ever since he appeared on an episode of The West Wing (can you name that character?) He is just a pleasure to watch.
  5. You don’t have to understand to follow. Whether the science is realistic or fiction, you can enjoy the progression of the case without knowing exactly what they’re talking about. I appreciate that, since it generally goes over my head!
  6. There’s no fake sexual tension between Hood and Rachel. Normally the show would throw it in there to make things more tense; thankfully, we haven’t been forced to suffer that. Yet.
  7. It’s a breath of fresh air from the CSI family. CBS has developed a number of procedurals that work hard to complete the crime universe that is still left uncovered. It may seem silly, but I think there’s a lot going on in crime detection and prevention that would interest us a great deal. NCIS, Criminal Minds, Cold Case, and Eleventh Hour, all fill in varying holes, and provide something for everyone. Or everything for us all. Your choice.
  8. The show isn’t gruesome. Sure, sometimes there are things onscreen that make me turn away, but Eleventh Hour manages to tell some pretty horrifying stories without splattering blood and gore left and right. It’s not a family show, but it also won’t scare the crap out of you before you go to bed.
  9. It’s funny. Hood, in his highly intellectual manner, can tell a joke, make a pun, or fire a zing. While not a comedy, the levity adds dimensions to his character, as well as defining his relationship with Rachel, and now, Felix.
  10. There’s no serialized storylines to keep track of. Granted, there are the usual progressions, growth, etc., that come with any show. But, and I’m not complaining, too many shows require work on our part to keep up. I like having the option of relaxing with a show that doesn’t ask me to remember what happened last week.
  11. I like that the cast is so small. Yes, that could have gone in a different direction, because, if I hated one or more of the permanent cast the show would drive me crazy. But, with three main actors, each of whom I enjoy, I can watch the show without cringing when person X appears, which is generally the case on shows with larger ensembles (I’m looking at you, Katherine Heigl!)

Well, that’s a coincidence! Eleven ways that Eleventh Hour succeeds. Who’d have guessed?

In all seriousness, Eleventh Hour has joined a slew of powerful shows currently on the Eye, each holding court over their respective slots on the weekly schedule. Some are stronger than others, but each and every one of them produces viewers. Whether the “right” demographics are among the average 12 million people watching Eleventh Hour is for CBS to decide. I can only hope that they respect the preference of those viewers (who were choosing Eleventh Hour over ER and Private Practice), and give us back our Hood.

CBS has already scared us into thinking that they may cancel Cold Case and Worst Week; don’t let them get us again. Hood and co. must live!

Now that ER is gone it would be pretty foolish if not downright idiotic for CBS to cancel the show because of ratings without seeing how the show fares next season against Leno.

Wasn’t Miller in the West Wing episode with Charlie and his “little brother”?

You got it! Orlando Kettles!

I’m sorry, but have you ever known any FBI agents? Marley is completely miscast. My sis was an agent in Washington, DC, and I knew all of her friends. FBI agents are NOTHING as you would expect from watching a tv program. And, should you think she was in a strange squad, she was in both counter-terrorism (worked the embassy bombing in Africa) and took down drug lords. One of her best friends was a ditsy blonde; turned out she was in white collar crimes, ie banking. Her boyfriend was HRT (Hostage Rescue Team) and you don’t get more hard core than that in the FBI. Not one as dismal and matter of fact as Marley plays Rachel. Sis was in the thick of it, and they were nothing like what you see on Eleventh Hour, let alone tv in general. Just sayin.

I love the addition of Felix…he made me realize that they really do care about the enjoyment factor of the program, because prior to that it was too clinical and, frankly, damned boring.

For me, its a great DVR show to watch on the weekend, so I won’t be upset if it sticks around. I’ll still watch other programs in the time slot first, however.

Shelton may not click for someone familiar with FBI agents, but all I said was that she was believable as one. I guess I should have qualified that by saying “to me”. Sorry.

While I appreciate that everyone has their own tastes, out of curiosity, what else is there to watch at 10PM on Thursdays?

I love your 11 reasons and I hope it stays because it’s a great show. The chemistry between Marley and Rufus is one of the reasons I watch it.

I agree with pretty much everything you had to say about this wonderful show, and I can only hope like heck that CBS wakes up and sees it this way to. It is refreshing and unique, and I looked forward to it every week. As a matter of fact, today being Thursday, I am rather bummed to not have it to watch tonight.
For all those who would like to do something to save the show, many fans and I are encouraging everyone to visit the CBS website, go to the bottom of the page and locate the ‘User Feedback’ link (it is tiny), and let them know why this show is so great and why we want it back. We are also trying to encourage fans to send CBS a watch (just a cheap Walmart one) set on 11:00 telling them that we want it back. Anything you can do will help and, hopefully, we will all have more to chat about next Fall!

That’s awesome!

April 13, 2009 at 5:10 PM

Cool, does that mean that you are gonna join us? :)

April 11, 2009 at 12:55 AM

I agree with you Kellie. I know, I missed the show last night. And let’s send those watches! We can’t let CBS cancel this jewel!

April 11, 2009 at 5:35 PM

Perfectly put, Lourdes. My watch is in the mail. We need all EH fans in on this, so spread the word! Let’s get to it guys!!

April 13, 2009 at 5:09 PM

Just a little update on the watches. I have gotten many positive comments and suggestions. One I would like to pass along. Please include a note with your watch advising CBS to donate the watches to charity. I think that that would be the right thing to do and I think it is a great idea. Also, remember to ‘pull out the tab’ on your watch so that it stays on 11. :)

And we see the wonderful slash and dash and gore replacement “Harpers Island” is a bomb. Do they have a 17 year old that picks shows like this and cancels good ones. No offense but 17 to 25 year olds don’t watch much TV why in the devil do the continue to pull good shows and put the crap on that that kids like. I suppose they don’t think if you watch TV you have any intelligence. I am so glad I have cable. those shows are written for ADULTS.

April 24, 2009 at 6:11 PM

I’m not much out of that demo, and I didn’t even bother with Harpers Island. Here, here.

CBS may have been shortsighted enough to cancel Eleventh Hour, but the Campaign to bring it back is not over. If you love EH like we do, check out this new link at our new site. There are still possibilities to save this show but we need each and every fan to help!
