Both of this week’s stories were, in my eyes, the best yet. Another private detective story, and then a look into the interesting backstory of Josef. If this is the peak though, then I am not sure I’ll ever be sold on Moonlight as a show. I know I’ve been tough on it, and I realize that there is a lot of good about the show. If they can sustain this level of quality through the last six episodes, though, that story might change.
“Fleur de Lis”
What is with this show and creepiness? Beth stalking Morgan/Coraline is just another stop on that train. I get that she has a grudge to bear, but neither Mick or Beth is completely sold on the idea that the photographer they know today is the vampire that they knew yesterday — well, at least not yet.
Beth doing the voiceover was also a bit off putting. It’s such a staple of film noir, and changing the convention doesn’t really work, though it was just a little interesting to see her perspective on things. Her stories (about the college boyfriend for example) just aren’t as interesting as Mick’s. At the end of the day, she kinda proved that she didn’t know what she was talking about when she staked the human Coraline.
I love non-linear storytelling. This episode started in media res and then flashbacked 24 hours in the past, so a more simple way than some of the crazier stuff we’ve seen (Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles did some really great stories with unique techniques).
I will say this … Mick and Coraline do have a chemistry working for them that Beth will never experience. I don’t know where it’s going, but this story is the most interesting I’ve seen yet.
“Sleeping Beauty”
I instantly reacted to Coraline’s doctor, played by Kavita Patil, who also played SGT Medawar in the TOC on The Unit. I was a BIG fan of that show, and its great to see Patil in another role.
We are finally pulling the veil back on the life of Josef Kosten. It was pretty odd to see Mick show such intense feeling for anything, but his reaction to Josef’s death was a big scene. You just knew Josef was inside the apartment at that point, and I kept expecting him to open the door during Mick’s moment.
I do really like the relationship between Josef and Mick. More than just friends, they are brothers in the truest sense of the word. They fight like brothers but stand up for each other when it really matters. Coraline’s drop in about how she introduced them and how they didn’t get along then confirms that they were always like this. At the same time, Josef never trusted Mick (or himself, really) enough to let him know about Sarah.
‘Josef Kosten in love,’ is as surprising to me as it was to Mick. It explains a lot about who Josef is, though. Loving and losing isn’t all its cracked up to be, despite what Tennyson’s poem says.

BTW…Sleeping Beauty is the episode that made me a Moonlight fan and not just a watcher of eye-candy =)
