TV SHOWS COLUMNS FEATURES CHATS QUESTIONS

HawthoRNe – When the only thing going for it is a guest star, is a show worth your time?

Michael EalyI seem to be continuing my enjoyment / boredom relationship with TNT’s newest question mark, HawthoRNe. I’m also about past the point of “it would be foolish to stop watching at this point”, so I seriously need to make a decision: keep watching HawthoRNe, or let it go?

Maybe the biggest hurdle I’m facing is that the show isn’t bad, it just isn’t necessarily compelling. With nothing sucking me in, is there a reason to hang on? Is anyone out there getting something out of HawthoRNe that they’d care to share?

There were only two things that got me to perk up last night: one was when Ray (David Julian Hirsh) was being told about the VP VIP (that’s “very private” VIP) by Tom (Michael Vartan). Apparently, it was someone whose admittance to the hospital needed to be kept secret from Christina (Jada Pinkett Smith). I knew that I was wrong, but a part of me was waiting, waiting for that door to open, the camera to pan to the bed, and …

Will Smith to be lying there!

The man is supposed to do a “drive by” on the show, and I thought maybe Jada had talked him into doing something more. Who was actually there? Christina’s mother-in-law, Amanda (Joanna Cassidy). As Al would say, “meh.”

Thing number two was the appearance of Michael Ealy (Sleeper Cell), as a world-renowned specialist. I’d say his addition to the show, as a potential love-interest for Christina, or not, would be worth sticking around for, but it’s unlikely to be happening. Ealy is, however, a phenomenal actor who would probably also help shore up a male fan base for the female-driven series.

So, yeah, that’s pretty much it. Only other two things of semi-note: Christina is becoming more hospital social worker than any sort of nurse. And, I thought it was funny when Christina effectively got sent to the corner for a timeout by her boss, John Morrissey (James Morrison, 24) after mixing it up with Ealy’s doc. I’m not worrying that she won’t be back again next week, but I was amused by the way Morrissey handled her.

Alright; let’s go. You’ve all sat on the sidelines for far too long. Should you, and I, stick with HawthoRNe, or let it go?

I gave it 3 episodes and jumped off. There has never been a show with a bigger “meh”….
