Mercy’s Callahan needs to make up her damn mind

Veronica Callahan

Mercy is far from a perfect show, but I am enjoying it so far. Michelle Trachtenberg plays naivete probably better than anyone on the planet.  Jaime Lee Kirchner’s character still needs a bit more rounding out, but I like Sonia’s style. And frankly, I’m way into Taylor Schilling’s Veronica Callahan. Well, all except for one little thing.

In general, Callahan is a pretty darn good character. Sure, the its not the first time we’ve seen the affected war vet come home and find the little things in their lives different, but here there’s a difference. How often is that story told about a female soldier? I think it makes for an interesting character dynamic, and I believe these types of stories should be told more often. Again, though, there’s just one problem with her….

Girl needs to make up her damn mind! Wishy-washy when it comes to relationships is not a cute thing. Let’s take a look at a couple from another show (I never liked the Grey’s Anatomy/Defying Gravity comparisons, but after Mercy its almost like someone said, “Hey, let’s do Grey’s about nurses … it’ll be great!): Meredith picking between Derek and Finn sucked as a storyline. Just to prove I’m not picking on the females, Derek’s picking between Addison and Meredith sucked as well, but slightly less than when they retread the whole thing with Rose. Make up your damn mind, silly TV characters!!

Other Stuff

  • I really like Colm Meaney and all, but he’s no Delroy Lindo.
  • I love being beat over the head with a baseball bat as much as the next guy, but, just to be sure, this is a show about nurses who go way out on a limb for their patients, right? Yeah, I thought that was what they were trying to tell me …
  • Trachtenberg is an underrated actress who seemingly gets to play two roles (Naive: Mercy, Buffy, ‘reformed’ Georgina on Gossip Girl, or well, the opposite: regular Georgina on Gossip Girl, Eurotrip) … It would be nice to see how this character grows out of the shell they’ve started her with.
  • Mulgrew is a wonderful actress, but I think a poor addition to the show, as Callahan’s parents are just plain annoying.
  • Drinking during a company softball game? Well, I never! (cough cough, bullshit, cough cough)
