The results of my little guessing game with May Spoilers deaths are in, and I didn’t fare to well. Some guesses I still feel pretty good about what I said, when I said it. Others, well, I think the producers of some of these shows, releasing hints at deaths like they really matter to their respective shows … well, that’s just crummy work. Regardless, let’s take a look at how I did (Spoiler warnings, natch):
Castle: The only guess I got actually correct. Montgomery was the obvious choice. For everyone that complained that the twist was predictable … sure, during the episode maybe. But I don’t remember any of these people jumping up and down pointing to the Captain before. What I didn’t see coming, though, was his involvement with Lockwood and McCallister. I guess it was an old enough sin, that it didn’t affect how we the audience viewed the man. Beckett leading the team to keep quiet about his past seemed like a fitting, if not wrong, reaction.
Bones: That was a big swing and a miss, wasn’t it? It’s not to say that Vincent Nigel-Murray won’t be missed around the Jefferson, because he will. What I’m not so sure about, though, is how much fans will miss him. Nothing against Ryan Cartwright, he’s a funny guy whom I’ll be watching on his new show Alphas. The downside to the “squintern” program Bones adopted after the departure of Zach Addy is that we don’t get nearly as much time to get attached to the individual interns. Daisy and Wendell we probably knew better than the others, which made them more likely candidates. If his death is the true catalyst for a Bones and Booth relationship? Well, then this show continues to devolve from the great show it once was.
Glee: The producers have teased two big deaths on Glee this year. The first was a bird … no, I’m not kidding, a bird. So, with a little more build up, I thought that this death would have a little bit more of an impact. Alas, that was not to be the case. Whereas on Bones, the death has an impact on many of the characters, only Sue would feel her sister’s death. They fumbled around in making it a part of Finn and Kurt’s stories (more so the former), but that was a reach. I hate it for Sue … but where does the character go from here? Does she finally grow the heart on the outside that we know is there already, buried deep? I doubt it, because then you kill the character’s whole shtick. So, what’s the point then?
NCIS: Well, I was wrong here, too. But, at least in one of the deaths I’m glad. My friend Ayreh and I disagree … I thought Mike Franks was a very interesting choice. Emotional impact on Gibbs, plus, the whole team knew him … to some degree or another. He’s been a part of the show for a couple of seasons now, albeit in a recurring role. He has been, to some extent Gibbs’ core – not necessarily his emotional core, but something. He’ll be missed … Unlike his murderer. Don’t get me wrong, I’m a big fan of Kerr Smith, and think he needs to get a full-time gig stat. But killing the bad guy? Yeah, that’s nothing special.
Bonus Time!!!
Hawaii 5-0: I never really got around to making this prediction, but I’m going to talk about it now anyways. The Governor was one of two choices I’d have made two weeks ago (Kamekona would have been the other, but that dude is way to lovable to kill off). If I’d guessed last week, I probably would have landed on Rachel. But, to make the Governor a villain? If Castle wasn’t doing it simultaneously, I’d call it derivative. I’m not sure how her death will affect the 5-0 team, which had all but fallen apart by the end credits anyways. I’m sure they’ll be some brilliant piece of writing to turn that around next season (Could you pick up on the sarcasm? If not, go back and watch the part of the episode where they were looking at the car bomb, and tell me why people think this show is so good?).
